Russell T. Davies Returns to Doctor Who as New Showrunner

Moffat was pushing it hard himself (“Why call it Series Five unless you think Matt Smith is the Third Doctor?”), though that might have been at PR’s behest. I thought the whole thing was moronic.

Moffat at one point was trying to call season 5 season 11.1, for Eleventh Doctor, Season 1. Then, after so many questions about what the season would be labeled were asked he said something like "oh just call it Fred."

Then, fans who had no familiarity with Classic Who, specifically the Tom Baker era were confused because they didn't know who Fred was.

When talking to Jo Martin at a meet and greet, we asked her if she was given any indication where her Doctor falls. She said that Chibnall told her that she is the original Doctor.

Titan Comics' forthcoming mini-series about Martin's Doctor is titled Doctor Who Origins. Make of that what you will. :)

My friend and I also spoke with Mandip Gill at a meet and greet. [...] We both got an inclination that she'd be back in the RTD era (possibly only for the 60th). Buuut, that's a totally subjective take on our part. She did not say that but there seemed to be hints. For one thing, she indicated she had a conversation with RTD. That tidbit came out by accident in the course of the conversation. Of course, that doesn't mean she'd be in it but there were other subtle things.

That would be interesting. We've had a supporting/guest character (Kate Stewart) cross showrunners in the New Series, but we haven't had a main character cross showrunners. I wouldn't be disappointed if Gill stayed on. I wouldn't be disappointed if Whittaker changed her mind and stayed on; even though they've already filmed her departure, there's no requirement they use it. But I feel, personally, that the BBC would prefer a clean slate.

^ To be fair, it's speculation on my part. But, while others on the show have said they filmed their last scenes, usually while saying how sad it was, Gill would not even commit to saying she filmed her final scene. And she definitely had some sort of conversation with RTD. Maybe I'm putting 2 and 2 together and getting 5, but it was suggestive. It wouldn't necessarily being staying on for long, but perhaps for the special. Or maybe not at all.

She actually went out of her way to NOT say she's done. She specifically did not confirm that she had filmed her final scene. Of course, that doesn't mean she will be on the show as a regular, or perhaps not at all, but it was odd and in contrast to comments from others.

You're wrong. She did confirm her departure in Doctor Who Magazine's Doctor Who 2022 Yearbook that was released two days before Eve of the Daleks came out.

Mandip isn't staying; she might come back for something in the future, but her full-time tenure with the show is over.
Just going to re-post this comment you made several months ago:
I really don't see either Mandip or John leaving (especially John, since he just joined the series), regardless of who the new Showrunner and Doctor end up being.

I'm referring to what she said, or didn't say, at the convention. I don't read that magazine.
Luckily, the internet breathlessly reported the exact words of where she "confirmed" she was leaving:

"It just feels like I'll stop then I'll come back again. I think I'll have to be away for a while before it hits me: I'm actually not coming back to Cardiff."
To be fair, that's the extent of the quote that I've found excerpted, it's possible they cut out a sentence before that where she said, "I'm quit of Doctor Who!" and she wasn't actually talking around it elliptically.

Also, if anyone is tempted to parse her exact words, as I was, the new studios where Doctor Who will be filmed are only about a mile away from the old one, so it's not something like, "I'm not coming back to Cardiff, I'm going to Barry."

In the absence of confirmation of Mandip staying on, all we can do is rely on things she's actually said herself, and she is on record making a statement that, based on the circumstances that existed when she made it, serves as confirmation of her departure until or unless it doesn't.

Trying to take potshots at me for my opinions being wrong more often than not isn't going to change the in-print comments she made, nor will it change the meaning of those comments as presented.

Thanks for sharing.

It did slip out that she had spoken with RTD recently. I think it's possible the situation has changed since the magazine interview.

However, I'm not pushing the idea that she'll return even if only for an episode. All I can say is that there were oddities that gave me that idea. But I might be putting 2 + 2 together and getting 5!

Yes, as with the previous job it's not necessarily for Doctor Who but "A Discovery of Witches" and "His Dark Materials" are finished and "I Hate Suzie" doesn't shoot in Cardiff so it's highly likely. 11 months of shooting too, so more than six episodes given that they're no longer have to shoot with COVID restrictions.

Apparently, the Sun is claiming that they're doing a series of specials with various returning Doctors. I'm not sure how believable that is since it would be quite expensive unless they don't show all their TARDISes. Although, it could be interesting if there's a narrative thread that spans multiple Doctors but doesn't have them interact with each other.
