What are your controversial Star Trek opinions?

We're all Real/True Fans on this BBS.

The amount of minutiae that we know would easily outpace most casual fans.
I've been called a Trek superfan, and I'm a very vocal critic. I won't hesitate to call out episodes and even whole movies as hot garbage if that's what they are in my eyes.

And @fireproof78 is spot on. A preponderance of fans know far more Trek trivia than those hired on to write new Trek scripts. Should that be the litmus test for landing a writing job? No. Get a decent understanding of the show, acquaint yourself with the writer's bible. Then tell us a really good Star Trek story. Superfan writers will never bring new life to the franchise. They'll most certainly snuff it out.

It outpaces the writers. I know from experience. Holding up writers to "true/real fan" standards is BS. And if being a "true fan" is what is required then no, I don't want that honorific.
You're "ONE OF US! ONE OF US! ONE OF US! ONE OF US! ONE OF US!"

You can't just hide from it, or strip it off. That's not how it works.

Your volume of knowledge is what determines it, and you can't just delete your volume of Trek Knowledge like files on a computer.

And some writers are "True/Real fans" and it shows in their writing.

We only need to look at how "Lower Decks", "Prodigy", even "Picard" handles their shows.

The Geekery in them along with minutiae is GREAT.

Even DISCO has it to varying degrees, although they forget some of their own minutiae that they invented which is disappointing.

Being critical of Stories / Plot is a seperate issue from being a "Super Fan".

Then what do you call the existing batch of writers?

Some of them are "Geeks / True / Super Fans".

Some of the TNG era writers were "Geeks / Super Fans" of TOS.

Yet they went on to work on TNG-era shows.

To blanket hate on Super Fans working on shows isn't the right way to go about it.

Not really, no. Excluding people is not ok.
But you wanted to exclude "Hard Core Trek Fans" from (writing/working) on (new/current) Star Trek shows so you can get your "Fresh Perspective".

How is that inclusive?

Not always.
ST can't only cater to things you like, it has to cater to the greater Trek Community.
That means other people's likes must be considered as well.

ST isn't a show made for FireProof78, it's a show made for as many ST fans as possible.

That means some things have to give to accomodate the tick boxes for other fans.

When I'm buying a chocolate cake I don't want the baker's entirely fresh perspective on what a chocolate cake should be. They can apply all their skill and unique creativity to it, but they also need to know what a chocolate cake is and how it differs from other cakes.

Unfortunately there’s no such thing as successfully “making Star Trek for as many fans as possible.” Surely just by reading this message board for a few years you’ve seen that we are as divided and focused inwardly on our own individual opinions as any fandom in existence.

Thers no way to please everyone, and I think the worst mistake you can make as a writer / producer is to try. Just tell your fucking story and let the chips fall. Somebody’s always going to bitch and hate for whatever reason.

Yes, but doesn't mean we shouldn't try. We only need to look at "The Mandolorian", "Star Wars: The Bad Batch", "The Book of Boba Fett" to see that going back to your roots can actively satisfy a giant chunk of your existing fan base.

Doesn't mean you don't try, you still tell your story, but you strive to satisfy as many as possible.

They don't need to be fan to know what it is.
True, Nick Meyer is literal proof of that.

He wasn't a Trekkie before he started, but he did "Do his HomeWork" and "Do his research" before he continued to make the movies.

So some amount of due diligience is necessary if you don't start out as a well versed fan.
