Pretty much. Smith isn't a young man (I think he'll be 64 this year?), and his post-Chicago run as a head coach hasn't exactly set the world on fire, nor did his defense in Houston (and even in Chicago, his failure to move on from the Tampa 2 defense that the rest of the league had figured out years before was his undoing, along with his loyalty to his assistants who had clearly shown they were unqualified, like Mel Tucker, Bob Babich, Ron Turner and Mike Martz). This was absolutely a pressure decision caused by heat from the NFL, which wants to prove to the world, "Hey, we aren't racist! Really!" So the Texans will let Lovie have a year coaching the team during what is patently obviously a rebuilding year while they try to figure out what in the world to do with Deshaun Watson. They'll hire McCown as the quarterbacks coach or an offensive assistant or something, Lovie will gracefully retire at the end of the season, thanking the Texans for giving him a chance to end his career in his home state, and then they'll promote McCown.
I was about to accuse you of being a time traveler, and then I looked it up and realized the Texans have been around since 1999 and began play in 2002, which was my senior year of high school / freshman year of college. Jesus.
I was in high school in the late 60s. I've been watching the Oilers/Texans football horror show for a long time now. Not sure why though. LOL
