How Star Trek Helped Discovery Star Emily Coutts Come Out
https://www.out.com/print/2022/2/08/how-star-trek-helped-discovery-star-emily-coutts-come-out

This issue of OUT is awesome, and Discovery’s LGBTQ+ cast are the cover story.

In addition to that wonderful, and heartwarming interview with Coutts, the issue has great interviews with Blu del Barrio and Ian Alexander, Wilson Cruz and Anthony Rapp, Mary Wiseman and Tig Notaro.

Was anyone else a little put off by the Out people sticking Emily (self described Bi woman) in a unicorn dress? Maybe I'm reading too much into it, but it doesn't sit right with me.

Not gonna lie, I didn't even notice it was a unicorn.

I hadn’t clocked it either. ‪‪I can absolutely see why it would offputting, ‪‪though I think ‪‪I feel mostly unbothered by it because Emily seems to be okay with it/happy with the interview and photo shoot.

But ‪‪I for sure see why you find it tasteful @Harpsichord, and ‪‪I think ‪‪I would tend to feel the same way in most similar instances.

Yeah, I think I am probably being too sensitive to it. I just have, uh, personal experience with gay men being extremely biphobic so my mind immediately goes to "what did these evil people do to Emily??" when it's nothing. Thank you for your input on it.

‪‪I’m Bi myself, and have similarly frustrating/infuriating experiences myself, so ‪‪I can relate.

And in any case, ‪‪I think being protective of other LGBTQIA+ folks, and other Bi individuals, is a good instinct to follow.

Then my gay friend with his unicorn shirts and cup that says "Always be yourself, unless you can be a unicorn, then be a unicorn." or something like that, and his overall love of rainbows and unicorns and glitter etc. supports something bad? I better tell him to hide all these things.

Unicorns have existed in stories, toys, paintings, UK passports, etc. for how many decades, but because odd people used it as a label for something bad, the unicorn itself is now bad as well?

Not at all, no one is asking unicorns to be banned or anything. I don’t think they’re bad at all. It’s just that in certain specific instances it can be hurtful for those of us who are Bisexual.

But since Emily Coutts herself doesn’t seem to take any issue with the photo shoot, ‪‪I don’t think this is one of those instances.

Perhaps they don't wanna give whoever invented that connection the power to determine what people can wear or not
Yeah, I was wondering if reclaiming the word was part of it. But I'm just a boy so I wanted some input from people who'd be more personally affected by it. Like I said upthread, not the end of the world or anything. Just personally I was off put by it.

I googled a bit, since this is totally new to me, and found this:
"Bisexuals represent between 52-59% of the queer community. The voiceless majority left to feel like a shameful minority. This is why we prioritise bi stories. bisexuals, pansexuals, biromantics, asexuals, polysexuals – we love the lot of you. Your stories need to be told." - Unicorn Magazine
There is a magazine with that name that specifically focuses on bi stuff...

This is just it, right? "LGBT" groups often treat the B as silent. So I'm not at all inclined to give Out magazine the benefit of the doubt. I think if Emily was fine with it it's probably cool, but she's probably never had to wade through dozens of messages from creepy straight couples trying to "hunt" for her on Tinder.

And if those folks want to name their "magazine" (that's a website) Unicorn, go for it. Doesn't mean I have to like it. This isn't a term I googled and then started disliking. I love and have loved people who have been hurt by it.
