And the dome on top looks insectoid.I think it's the catfish whiskers that really put it over the top.

I can't believe I've never seen this before. Was this model something he had originally built for Star Trek, or some other production?
i came across that some years ago. It had some information with it at the time- apparently it was built around the same time as the BoP. But I never was able to narrow down exactly what it was for. As I wrote, it bears similarity to several of Jefferies’ drawings. St the time I thought it may have been an earlier take on the Romulan ship.
The only other episodes around the same time as "Balance of Terror" featuring ships that we didn't actually see was the Astral Queen from "Conscience of the King" and the Gorn ship from "Arena." But it doesn't necessarily have to be those. It could very well be another Federation starship Chang was asked to build and then just never got used.
That whole stolen design thing came out of Roddenberry suggesting it to Schrader so they could maybe re-use the 11" Enterprise saucer as the enemy ship (with "watercolor" markings applied) and even possibly redresses of Enterprise sets for interiors. I can't imagine they would foot the cost of a study model for the Romulan ship. I'm pretty sure it wasn't intended as a Gorn ship as all of the scripts call for it to never be seen.It was the fact it bore some vague resemblance to Enterprise - nacelle and saucer - that made me think “Balance of Terror”. The script called for the BoP to have been based on a stolen Starfleet design. That part was filmed but got cut.
It was the fact that “Arena” falls close to BoT that made me think maybe Gorn. I went with that and upped the Star Fleet Battles-Gorn vibe, added a little frog, and went with it.
I ran across a fascinating design a while back. The USS Metaluna, a Cruzan class ship. The designer made several variations including a Bonnaventure.

While I think the scale of the design is a bit small, I think the overall design idea, of a nice sleek ship with a few parts added on, is a great way to handle this ship. I think being too slavish to the animated version leaves the final product more comic than almost art deco like a lot of the other designs.
I only found that one image. Lots of images of the original Metaluna concept (metal hull with blue markings) and a more traditional TOS coloring (gray with red markings).Where can i find this in full size?
TinEye might be able to find similar images of varying (possibly larger) sizes.
With all the current chatter in your "Unseen TOS..." thread, @Warped9 , I went to see what was happening on this thread, and realised it's almost a year since the last post!Looking ahead there aren’t too many ships left to do.
- Freighter Huron (“Pirates Of Orion”) technically I’ve already done this, but maybe I might tweak it.
- Orion pirate ship (“Pirates Of Orion”)
- Deimos’ shuttlecraft (“Albatross”)
- Kukulkan’s ship (“How Sharper Than A Serpent’s Tooth”)
- Karla 5’s ship (“The Counter-Clock Incident”)
- Romulan War Cruiser (“The Practical Joker”) actually a Klingon D7 but with Romulan Bird of Prey markings.
The final model could be the Enterprise given it’s a 3D model I have not yet done. Indeed other than the Class F shuttlecraft Galileo I really haven’t done any of the ships seen on TOS. That could be another thread subject exploring the ships of TOS particularly ships to be fleshed out or ships not actually seen.
Oh, don't worry, I understand completely. While nowhere as talented as yourself (I can't draw/design on computer for shit, everything seems counter intuitive), I've been trying come up with ONE set of FASA ship stats and relevant backstory for a particular design on Brad Torgersens' FASA STSTCS forum since last AUGUST.I feel bad about falling behind, but it’s been a tiring year. I really want to get back on track with these projects.
Oh boo-hoo. Get back to me when you’re twenty years behind schedule.I feel bad about falling behind, but it’s been a tiring year. I really want to get back on track with these projects.

Yeah! If you beat yourself up, you might fall even further behind! LOL!Oh we hear that, and in spades. I do not know anyone that has not fallen off the horse recently. Life is too much effort. Don't beat yourself up.
