Stargate SG1 show. any fans?

There are a few SG-1 eps that I like (Lifeboat, Shadow Play) but I'm not really a fan of the whole series.

Mostly because I want to punch a wall every time O'Neill opens his trap. I mean, I realize it's just another example of RDA playing himself in pretty much every show he appears in, but it still annoys the shit out of me.

I know one thing, I could never serve with somebody like O'Neill. I'd be walking into whirling, unshielded manufacturing equipment my first day on the job.

There are episodes where RDA plays it more straight/seriously, but in general he is pretty fast and loose with the character, so I'm not sure how you'd enjoy the show other than watching a curated list of episodes.

I do like that one episode where Daniel ends up in an alternate universe where O'Neill is the General in command of the base. RDA plays that version completely straight and badass, doesn't do any of his regular schtick.

"There but for the Grace of God," I think that's the one.

RDA's O'Neill is one of SG1's top selling points to me.

That's actually my favorite season 1 episode but I like O'Neill being funny as well. I think maybe they had a better blend between funny and serious early on and maybe he did rely to much on jokes in the later seasons but I still liked the show. The Ori stuff wasn't quite as interesting to me no was Ben Browder who I loved on Farscape but even those seasons still were okay.

Saw quite a few episodes as a kid, liked the idea of the Space Gods (though the show was a bit uneven with which ones they used) but overall I didn't like the military tone/airly close to real world aspect of it and I really couln'd stand O'Neil. And from what I remember the show was also all over the place with tone and storylines.

This might also be a result of which episodes I saw but...this show felt like an incredibly slow burn to child me and it always kinda felt like they felt like they had made their mind up to show as little science fiction or aliens in their sci-fi show as possible.
Did the show get over that?

Saw like one episode of Atlantis, and none of Universe.

Theoretically if you watch the movie, the pilot and second episode (which is good), then you could jump to "There but for the Grace of God" and finish off the season..."Politics" is a bit of a clip show episode, but a well executed one that would tell you most of what you need to know about S1, and I think the consensus is that the ending of S1 is one of the best finales of the series.

I use to call the show a realistic version of TNG. Also a show that relies heavy on it's star to be the star but also has very very strong chemistry between the 4 main characters and even 5 if you count General Hammond. It's also a show were we see Progress in terms of tech and political alliances they make. If something happens in one episode like finding a new piece of tech then chances are it will be used again.

Well, the USA doesn't have a Prime Directive, the US Air Force is not Starfleet and the Goa'uld was shockingly resistant to reason or good intentions, so...

I really like the fact that O'Neill, and Hammond, were very much of the mentality of never leaving anyone behind. I also think they portrayed the Air Force in a very positive light, overall.

Of course they had to do to having a agreement with them so they could use military stuff but I don't mind if it was a kind of clean version of the Air Force that focused on the good stuff that comes with the Armed Services. Not everything has to be dark and gritty. I think they also had enough conflict between the like of Mayborune and the NID to help keep it a little grounded.

The show is very pro-Air Force, which is fine, they are being supported by the real USAF after all. Although it does get a bit off-putting that the other branches are essentially neglected. The only other branch of the US military that seems to have any regular involvement with the Stargate program are the Marines, though often the Marine characters are the ones that end up being the uncooperative jerks if not actually evil or just someone for one of the main characters to express a dislike of.

For essential S1 episodes I would also likely add "The Torment of Tantalus" and "Solitudes"

thers a few more recxommended episodes i might add such as "enigma", not saying they are the best of the season just what impact they have on the shows mythology.

SG-1 often used it's clip shows to add to the story such as in S6 "Discolsure" when the other members of Permanent members of the UN security council were told about the SGC.

"The Torment of Tantalus" has a lot to recommend it but AFAICR isn't really essential to following the overall story.

"Solitudes" is a good one too, and has more tie-in to episodes that will follow...but I don't think it's referenced again in S1.

I was basically thinking of the S1 episodes that had consequences for the larger world of the series.

Especially for O'Neill, who has a whole story about that in the show itself. It isn't just a cliched military man attitude and O'Neill has quite a lot of character development throughout the show.

Also, it is telling that Anderson got asked to an Air Force award banquet and the show received an award from the Air Force due to its respectful portrayal. It's really quite something, especially when they were able to have two active duty Air Force generals have cameos. I think SG-1 did the best with the military portrayal, while having Jackson and Teal'c provide that outsider's perspective.

If SG-1 was being made today, most of the SG teams would be Space Force, I should think.
Honestly, if they wanted to do that as a Stargate: The Next Generation idea of a handing over of oversight, having more international teams, similar to Rainbow 6. I would really enjoy that. Then they could do another spin off called Stargate: Criminal Investigations Division, where a team is responsible for solving crimes committed off world.
