Spoilers Star Trek: Picard General Discussion Thread

But it's not the same thing and you know it.

The MCU has a master plan, and every bit of it now in part services it. I mean, consider the Disney+ shows:

WandaVISION - Focuses on secondary characters from the Infinity saga, sets up elements of Phase 4 (Dr. Strange & The Multiverse of Madness).
The Falcon & The Winter Soldier - Focuses on secondary characters from the Infinity saga, sets up elements of Phase 4 (new Captain America)
Loki - Focuses on a secondary character from the Infinity saga, sets up elements of Phase 4
What if...? - Largely shallow fanservice, but might have introduced elements for Phase 4 as well ("evil" Strange).
Hawkeye - Focuses on a secondary character from the Infinity saga, and sets up a new character for Phase 4

Everything builds upon existing "lore" - similar to how Trek has historically worked. However, unlike Trek, each bit is also put together with the understanding that it will be the building block to something greater from Day 1. Hell, I'd also argue that Disney did that clumsily with Mandalorian Season 2, where they introduced tons of new characters who would all get their own shows.

That level of forward thinking just isn't there yet for Trek. Arguably it was maybe the case SNW, though it's hard to say how much that was being reactive to the positive response to Anson Mount. But in general Trek is still in the "throw shit against the wall and see what sticks" phase - and hasn't done anything even as ambitious as the Maquis arc which stretched across TNG/DS9/VOY back in the day.

I do think there will be some sort of crossover event at some point, but I think it's going to be clumsy and not properly foreshadowed.

Is it exactly the same and as well planned out as the MCU? No. I’ll grant you that. But it still builds on what happened before. That’s the general idea of a franchise. How you do it is the big thing. And yes, in total agreement said crossover will be sloppy.

It seems so...

The only thing I can say is that a magazine would probably not be the medium they choose for definitely and officially and loudly stating that it’s only three seasons (I believe this kind of thing is mostly left to press releases?). However, I can also see how his words can be interpreted that way, depending on how you approach it.

Maybe in the end everyone is right - the show will end with season 3 but there will be more after that (a spin off or something). :)

Since Trek is now venturng into animation, perhaps an adult anime Seven of Nine series?

Something along the lines of Golgo 13 or Cowboy Bebop? (Minus Golgo 13's hyperventilating -- "Oh, my! Golgo 13 has accomplished the impossible!" )

Just read the SFX article. While not heavy on spoilers (of course), it does delve quite deep into the themes of Seasons 2 and 3. Here a few quotes that jumped out at me (emphasis mine):

Matalas:
“You will definitely see a side of Q you’ve never seen before. There’s some things going on with Q that are definitely surprising, considering the kind of being he is.

Later in the article De Lancie says:
Clearly something is up, he doesn’t have too much time to screw around. Perhaps he has something to deliver.

Seems that Q is motivated by some kind of ticking clock scenario. Does he owe a debt to a more powerful entity? Is he dying? Evolving? Time will tell.

When asked if the "weight of canon" adds pressure, Matalas says:
"Not so much in season two,” Matalas offers. “Definitely in season three, there are some game-changing Star Trek Universe ideas. Season two, as epic in scope as it is, is an intimate story.”

Later in the piece, Patrick Stewart adds that while TNG covered Picard's Starfleet life quite thoroughly and a bit of his personal-life, PIC seems to go deeper into his youth than ever before:
"we have done – I must be careful what I say about this – explored Picard’s family life, his background, his parents. (Spoilers! – Ed) We’ve done a lot of that. And it’s going to be very, very startling, I think."

Reading between the lines, it feels that while the crew physically travels through time and dimension, the season will explore Picard's personal timeline and how those events crafted the man he grew to be. I don't think Stewart is talking about the illusions of his parents we saw in The Naked Now and Tapestry but it does read to me that the season will delve into how his youth shaped his relationships with not only his brother, but his ability to connect with other people in general. "It's going to be very, very startling" is clearly future-tense framing.

This leads to another Matalas quote about what motivates Season 2. And a specific question that a lot of folks here have been asking!
"Why did he never marry Beverly Crusher and have a family of 10? Those are jumping-off points to answer some of those personal mysteries"

There are lots of interesting nuggets regarding Season 3 and some great color from Matalas, Goldsman, De Lancie, and Stewart. It is worth reading the entire article IMO.

I would've loved for Picard to marry Beverly, have 10 more children between the two of them.

I would want to have at least 3 more children between Picard & Beverly. 4 in total if you count Wesley into the group.

That would be a nice big & happy family where Patrick Stewarts 2x children, Gates McFaddens 1x child, & Wil Wheaton can all come on screen to portray the children of JLP & Beverly Crusher.

I hope Geordi shows up with Leah Brahms as his wife.

I would want Levar Burton & Susan Gibney to show up, even if briefly.

Also bring Levar's IRL daughter onto Star Trek to portray Geordi's Daughter.

Leah Brahms could be his daughter's step mom.

Ugh. This whole relationship is garbage. I can't believe they are using that as the jumping off point.

Sir Patrick Stewart stars as Jean Luc Picard in "The Family Man. " Guest appearance by Nicholas Cage. :sigh:

Because that's not why I watch Star Trek. I can get family drama anywhere else. This isn't interesting or enjoyable. I deal with families on a daily basis. I don't need it in my rocketships and rayguns show.
It doesn't have to be the absolute focus of the series, you'll still get your dose of RocketShips & Rayguns.

I can gurantee you that will happen.
