Spoilers Star Trek: Picard General Discussion Thread

Read the article. It doesn't say that - just they had a 3 season plan, but 'who knows what the future holds'

But I'd be fine with it.

EDIT: HERE'S THE OPENING TO THE ARTICLE https://twitter.com/dannylavery9/status/1486302886644568065/photo/1

It could also simply mean that season 3 has an open ending, but an ending nonetheless - and/or that there’s gonna be a spin-off of some kind (which is what my money is on). I do think Goldsman would sound differently by now if they were already writing season 4, so I can see how his words can be interpreted in this way.

I’m fine with three seasons. Tell the story you want to tell and move on. If in a few years all the parties are around and interested, and there’s a good story that makes sense, revisit. Shows like Grey’s Anatomy and Supernatural are exactly why they shouldn’t continue JUST to continue.

All of the best stories have concrete endings. It's arguably one of the reasons why never-ending serialization ala MCU doesn't work well. There's no catharsis and no closure, because you need to set up a teaser for the next story.

That said, just because Season 3 may be the end of Picard's story, that doesn't mean it has to be an end to the stories of all of the supporting characters. I could easily see them doing some sort of Seven-focused spinoff, considering how much Jeri Ryan has been enjoying the return to the role.

But if they did spin-off Seven or any of the other characters, it would no longer be Picard. That’s the point. At the same time, as Star Trek will soon have eleven series and thirteen movies, it plays into the same idea as the continuously going MCU-esque experience, doesn’t it? Franchises are a double-edged sword.

GA and NCIS burn through a LOT of cast members (people are constantly coming and going).

Overall, really looking forward to this. I am a bit worried that most of the season will be set in 2024. I never liked The Voyage Home either.

I'm so looking forward to finally getting to watch season 2 and see what the characters story arcs will be .Guinan and Picard seeing each other again is what I've been wanting to see .And of course Laris she's a fantastic character. I'm happy she was brought back too.

Eh, I don't think so?

I mean, the MCU is set up to create a coherent franchise-wide storyline. There's been rumors that they want to do that with Trek, but it will be harder because every single show is in a different time period (though the gap between Prodigy and Lower Decks is small). You'd need to have a Q or something yoink people out of their own timelines, and setting up the legwork for this level of temporal shenanigans is not something I see in the cards any time soon.

According to The Trek Central (or rather, a new magazine interview), PIC will end with season 3.

It appears Trek Central may have jumped the gun: https://twitter.com/TheTrekCentral/status/1486345521316913161
SFX apparently told them that when Patrick Stewart stated they were wrapping up the series, he was referring to season 3 and not the series as a whole. (Because this is a British magazine, they refer to seasons as series.) Akiva Goldsmith also states he's not sure what's next (after season 3) implying that season 3 is not being billed as the definitive end yet. Also Dave Bliss, a production designer on Picard, tweeted implying the show being over is news to him: https://twitter.com/DaveBlass/status/1486385811251556356. LeVar Burton also just appeared on Entertainment Tonight about a week ago strongly hinting he was in talks to appear in Picard suggesting a 4th season is in the works, and Gates McFadden hinted on Twitter a few weeks ago that she's also heard someting. We shall see, I wouldn't be surprised if season 3 is the last season, but it's not official yet.

Out of TOS came the movies and TNG.
Out of TNG came DS9, VOY, PIC and LDS
Out of FC came ENT.
Out of VOY came PRO.
Out of Disco comes Strange New Worlds and the oft rumored not appearing anytime soon Section 31 and potentially the Academy series.

It’s all one big universe with one thing leading into the next. The likelihood that there isn’t going to be some sort of crossover event at least for the P+ live action series? Come on. Those temporal shenanigans will be here one day.

But it's not the same thing and you know it.

The MCU has a master plan, and every bit of it now in part services it. I mean, consider the Disney+ shows:

WandaVISION - Focuses on secondary characters from the Infinity saga, sets up elements of Phase 4 (Dr. Strange & The Multiverse of Madness).
The Falcon & The Winter Soldier - Focuses on secondary characters from the Infinity saga, sets up elements of Phase 4 (new Captain America)
Loki - Focuses on a secondary character from the Infinity saga, sets up elements of Phase 4
What if...? - Largely shallow fanservice, but might have introduced elements for Phase 4 as well ("evil" Strange).
Hawkeye - Focuses on a secondary character from the Infinity saga, and sets up a new character for Phase 4

Everything builds upon existing "lore" - similar to how Trek has historically worked. However, unlike Trek, each bit is also put together with the understanding that it will be the building block to something greater from Day 1. Hell, I'd also argue that Disney did that clumsily with Mandalorian Season 2, where they introduced tons of new characters who would all get their own shows.

That level of forward thinking just isn't there yet for Trek. Arguably it was maybe the case SNW, though it's hard to say how much that was being reactive to the positive response to Anson Mount. But in general Trek is still in the "throw shit against the wall and see what sticks" phase - and hasn't done anything even as ambitious as the Maquis arc which stretched across TNG/DS9/VOY back in the day.

I do think there will be some sort of crossover event at some point, but I think it's going to be clumsy and not properly foreshadowed.

It seems so...
