Presumably there was something connected to SHIELD that they were looking for?
Mainly wondering if I missed a relevant line along the way...
The watch was found among debris collected from the destroyed Avengers tower. It was barely worth including at that black market sale except as "A watch possibly owned by an Avenger, or possibly Pepper Potts, or some low level employee. However it's a Rolex so we'll start the bidding at $10,000." In general only worth anything as an Avengers fan-collectable.
Kingpin was perturbed that an Avenger was looking into things, but what use is the watch? We know it had signal that Laura was able to trace. So let's imagine it was also an ID bracelet that enabled access to something or somewhere. In an era of biometric ID, this would be of limited value, but maybe. Still, why would Kingpin even imagine that that's what it was?
If it was Laura's watch, what was it doing in Avengers Tower? OK, maybe Laura snuck in for a covert conjugal. How would anyone besides she and Clint have known?
A lot of Occam's Razer worthy points in that, but yeah, I agree, season 2.

The watch had an agent number on the back which matched the traditional agent number of Mockingbird from the comics (Mockingbird being Hawkeye's wife). It was ultimately just an easter egg showing that Laura is, in fact, actually Mockingbird and not just a random character that movie Hawkeye happened to marry. Which is annoying, since it was originally built up to be super plot relevant only to then have no sort of plot resolution at all.
But, anyway, it was presumably in Avengers tower as part of Clint's effects. And the dialogue between Clint and Laura (and Kate) implied that there was a past between them and the Kingpin which may or may not have had something to do with the reason why Laura's been hiding on the farm for a decade, which could be why Kingpin's goons tried to get the watch.
Agree with everything else, but I find it satisfying This series is Clint Barton's swan song and idea of Mockingbird as his wife and mother of his children was worth it.
I don't have a problem with the easter egg being there. Just don't make it seem plot important if you're not willing to fulfill that.
Was it the Tower or the HQ they had following the tower?
Agreed that the watch seemed to be more important than it ended up actually being.
Unless they're thinking of doing a prequel Mockingbird series......? Then it being more than a quick easter egg would make sense.
It was a MacGuffin -- something important to the characters and motivating their actions, but irrelevant to the audience. In North by Northwest, we never found out what was in the secret plans, but we didn't need to, because all that mattered to the story was what the villain was willing to do to obtain them.
Having never watched that show, were these secret plans a bigger part of the show?
Show??? It's one of Alfred Hitchcock's most famous and admired movies! Hitchcock was the director who popularized the term "MacGuffin"(coined by his screenwriter colleague Angus MacPhail) for such a plot device.

And no, the plans were not a bigger part of the movie. That's the whole point -- they didn't need to be. All that mattered was that they gave the characters something to fight over. The story was about the conflict itself.
Think of it like a football game. You don't need to know much about the football. It's not important in itself. What's important is the battle over it, the strategies and plays that are attempted in order to gain control of it and advance it toward one goal or the other, and the skills and attributes of the players contending over it. Football analysts and fans talk endlessly about the players, their stats, and their plays, but nobody cares much about the statistics of the actual football.
OK, I think I confused it with Northwest Passage or Northern Exposure. Something with "north" in the title.
I'm standing by the idea that the watch in Hawkeye might be more than a passing reference. No idea if they are even thinking about a Mockingbird series or appearance, but they likely have absolutely everything on the table at this point.
Sure -- lots of stuff in the MCU is setup for future things. I'm just saying that the story still works even if there isn't anything more to the watch. All we need to know, at least for the sake of this season's narrative, is that the watch would have compromised Laura Barton in some way and so it was important for Clint to recover it.
It's been a few weeks but IIRC Clint says that the reason he's after the watch is because it compromises "a friend's" cover identity. The implication being that it outs Laura, and by extension; his entire family. Remember that Fury kept the Barton farm off the books, which is why they went there in AoU. But Mockingbird's files were almost certainly among the material Nat leaked in 'Winter Soldier' when SHIELD fell, so it wouldn't take much to link Laura with the watch.
As for WHY exactly Kingpin wanted that watch; yeah, it's not explicitly stated, but also remember Laura's reaction to hearing "the big guy" will be getting involved. The implication there could be that Mockingbird and Kingpin have a history, and Fisk is nothing if not relentless. Ultimately the how and they why isn't that important to the story; it's a McGuffin. It's enough that two parties want it, and that pursuit is the inciting incident, not the point of the story itself.
Also for clarity; it wasn't found at Avengers Tower (Tony sold that years ago...probably to Reed Richards) it was found in the ruins of the Avengers compound; the one that got flattened in Endgame. Presumably it was something he kept on him when he was running around as Ronin, and left it with the suit when they went to do the time heist; which is how they also had the Ronin suit at the auction.

This is not entirely true. Fans cared a whole lot when Tom Brady messed with some footballs--and up here in Canada, people are quite proud of their bigger balls. It was part of a CFL advertising campaign for awhile.

I should've known a football metaphor was more than a non-sports guy like me could tackle (heh).
still can't explain the sword...Clint used it and had it even during the final battle with Thanos and his goons. Maybe he lost it during the final battle in the rumble? Need to watch Clint's scenes very closely to see if drops the sword at some time?
