Spoilers My main suspects for the anomaly.

I don't get how anyone could look at the 90s Ferengi and think "You know what the problem with this race is? Their makeup." That's the bit they got right from the start! Plus the Discovery makeup team have gone and changed the makeup on a race represented by a main character for 7 seasons, again, for absolutely no good reason. That said, they may just be a hybrid like the Federation president like people have said. All of them that show up, they're all hybrids.

To get back on topic, the aliens are clearly going to be Kelvans from the Kelvin universe.

Brasky once used a wormhole to direct a fart into the Gamma Quadrant. Rumor has it that the population of the Dominion dropped 80% that day!

They changed the design slightly because makeup technology and television production has changed since the 1990s. Also in the reality of the shows, individual members of a species tend to look different from each other unless they're all clones or there is a severe genetic bottleneck. It's like asking why Jean Luc Picard doesn't look like James T Kirk, because they aren't the same person.

Even I don't care about the 32nd century Ferengi makeup anymore. They're a hybrid, from a different Ferengi ethnic group or the result of 800 more years of evolution and Ferengi medical tinkering with their genome.

Next?

I'm all for improving alien makeup as the technology evolves, I think Enterprise's Andorians are a massive improvement to what came before, Discovery's Cardassians look pretty decent if I recall and so do the Lurians. Even Worf's prosthetics evolved in later seasons of TNG. I would've loved to see an improved Ferengi design: something that looks the same at a glance, but when I put it side by side with an image of the original I can see how much better it is. All that amazing new detail that helps it stand up to HD resolutions.

But when I put this new Ferengi design next to the original Ferengi design it's like I'm putting a picture of a cat next to a dog, or a shark next to a dolphin. A few elements are definitely very similar, but these do not appear to be the same species! Like I said I can live with these guys being a hybrid species, or maybe their DNA was altered by a mutant strain of the Levodian flu, or maybe they're just really into cosmetic surgery in the future. It's Star Trek, there are tons of possible explanations.

It's not due to improved makeup techology though, I don't buy it. Discovery's production crew were allowed to indulge their creativity at the cost of a tiny degree of my immersion.

They looked like a Ferengi to me, big ears and everything.

Wait, is there still crying over the Disco Ferengi? Aside from minor surface details, they're virtually identical to the 90s Ferengi anyway.
I can't believe that I'm disagreeing with someone on the internet!!!

Edit: Sorry, I didn't intend this to sound like an attack on you. I'm just saying, we've got different opinions, and I'm not likely to come around to your point of view any time soon over this particular choice they've made. It's fine though, I've got tissues here to cry into.
