Khan was married. Who performed the ceremony?

It’s clear Khan was married presumably to the crew woman who left with him (McGivers
Iirc).

So who performed the ceremony and was qualified? Under what governing law? Presumably not Kirk although it’s possible. Don’t think Ceti Alpha had a judicial system. Probably not the ear worms. Probably not a religious leader in the augments.

So close relationship - yes. “Beloved one” sure. Wife? Or was Khan hallucinating?

Mostly dudes.

No children to speak of.

I smell a lot of Gay Marriage.

(What does gay marriage smell like?)

So Marriage tourism?

in the olden days American homosexuals would voyage to other countries where gay marriage was legal, to get married, and then return home where it was still dastardly criminal, and fester resentment.

(There was an episode of (US) Queer as Folk where the boys bicycled to Canada for a mass gay wedding.)

Meanwhile in the Star Trek Universe, gay and lesbian Americans sidestepping through pure war in the early 90s, for the opportunity to get married in Khan's Asia, all official, with a Khanian state stamp of approval on their marriage certificate.

I assume Khan and Marla McGivers considered themselves husband and wife, even if the marriage wasn't recognized or officiated by any constituted authority. God knows there are millions of cohabiting couples today who might just as well be married, even though their relationship doesn't have the blessing of state or church.

Before the neighbouring planet blew up, Khan had to plan for future generations.

After the neighbouring planet blew up, there were not a lot of women and there were no children, so fuck it.

Surely there was a hatchery on the Botany Bay?

Thousands of fertilized eggs?

What about that scene with the toddler crawling across the transporter pad while Genesis is counting down? Man that could have been super grim.

I see three possibilities:
1) Khan himself married them or nominated someone who could perform marriages. Since Khan was at that point the head of state he could declare either way legal. Also performing the marriage himself sounds a very khan thing to do.
2) The Botany Bay had on board someone who could perform marriages (in fact, Khan was a political/military leader, but it’s not a given that he was the captain of the ship)
3) Kirk married them as a parting gift.

this is so Italy until 2016. And a bit even today.

Khan is either a scientist or a zelot, yes he can be both, and he probably is.

If he's a scientist, he knows the colony has to be genetically diverse. Everyone one has to have babies with everyone, and marriage just gets in the way of that.

If he's a zelot, he knows that his sperms are the best, and all the women belong to him, and only pologamy can keep his wives in line and monogomous.

I'm pretty sure that in Khan's mind, he himself was the government on Ceti Alpha V and therefore a decree from himself that he and Marla had married was legally valid in his mind.
this. have to imagine Khan probably thought of himself as the government of Earth or whatever his nation state was called, in exile. and if he was the only authority in the land, why exactly have someone officiate when he's the official, especially James "Forgot my middle initial and also to check up on that group of superhumans I marooned" Kirk.
