A Pavel Chekov?

Why would you need to replace Chekov as navigatoins officer, wouldn't he be able to fill that position, wasn't he also a science officer on the Enterprise?

JDW

Spock was first officer & if I'm not mistaken he was still science officer & being a Captain he wore white of Command, why not wear blue of science?

When Spock was in TMP, he wore the orange insignia and epaulets of Science. Admittedly, he wasn't the XO at that point. When we next saw him, the uniforms and division colours had changed but he was a Captain, hence he had Command white trim.

IChekov is a much better choice than Rand (the lady who delivered coffee to Kirk in 7 episodes of TOS.)

Grace Lee Whitney won her ST VI cameo via a poll taken at a large US ST convention. The audience was asked to suggest TOS character names so that the actors could be approached to play Excelsior's as yet unidentified communications officer. Rand won! (IIRC, the runner up was Kevin Thomas Riley, aka Bruce Hyde.)

Grace ended up losing one of her scenes to Christian Slater, though (ie. waking Sulu with an urgent message). When Slater mentioned his desire to cameo in ST VI, it really helped that his mother, Mary Jo Slater, was the person in charge of casting! He was handed one of Rand's scenes.

If Rand wanted to move from being a yeoman to an officer wouldn't she have to take a test of some kind?
Even though Troi was posted as a Commander,(It is Commander!?) what was the test she took in an episode of TNG?

It depends on how Star Fleet runs things. She may have had to attend the Academy. She might of just had to attend an Officer Candidate School. Or she may have received a field commission.

Yeoman was a job, not a rank. Rand was basically the Captain's secretary.

She had no sleeve stripes in her TOS appearances, so whether she held the commissioned rank of Ensign or was enlisted is a mystery. Ignoring the error with her having the rank of Commander in the spacedock lounge in The Search for Spock, her progression from TMP (transporter chief with the rank of Chief Petty Officer) to TUC (Lt. J.G.) suggests she either attended Starfleet Academy later in life, or was somehow promoted up from the enlisted to the commissioned ranks.

Yes, but in the real world a yeoman is an *enlisted* job, so it seems reasonable to assume that she was enlisted during TOS, especially since--as you note--she held an enlisted rank in TMP.

Yeah, okay, I wasn't thinking terribly clearly when I was writing all that out. But I did get the point across: yeoman ≠ rank. ;)

I could see where she (Rand) had been accepted to OCS at some point, and then upon graduation, TPTB gave her the rank that someone of her age (not necessarily experience) would basically have... ergo, Commander.

(Similar to what happens to some doctors, nurses, etc., in the USN and/or USPHS today in RL.)

What was Rand's rank in TVH? She wore one of those little jumpsuits instead of a full uniform in that one.

I don't know what her rank was in TVH, but since she was wearing a jumpsuit, that meant she was still a non-com at the time.

Rand was a Lt. J.G. in TUC. Her being a Lt. Commander was a continuity error introduced in "Flashback."

As a LTJG, her going OCS and then being given a rank to show her experience would make even more sense, if you use a RL example. The number of LCDR's and CDR's is fixed, so those ranks don't come easily. ;)

Thanks for correcting me, btw. Been a while since I last watched TUC. Have to fix that problem... :)

Cheers,
