Is Starfleet a military organization?

Weird example: Someone is having a barbeque and wants to eat a steak, sausage, fish, clams, all kinds of meat products and eventually french fries. Does that last thing on the menu make him a vegetarian? Same with Starfleet, they do a whole lot of things and then fight if necessary, is it military? But clearly many people have already made their mind about this so no worth debating.
No, it does not make them a vegetarian, because vegetarian means someone who does not eat meat at all. Being in a military does not exclude the other activities. Rather, it's inclusive. Your example isn't on point. Sorry. :(

I think it comes down to one's own definition of the "military." I don't know if debating is going nowhere as it is always informative but I will of course be willing to cease at any time :)
If you wish there's always private messages but I think we have already made our minds. =)

What if.... that person eats all the meat first as a last temptation, then becomes a vegetarian and eats the fries.
But if my example sucks it's because I suck. =)

It was just Halloween, a lot of us have temporary name changes for the holiday.

I wonder what he will be called next Christmas.... well, wasn't that funny.
Nice if name changes are only temporary, everyone doesn't have to relearn everybody. I'm not proud of my username but that's the one I chose in 2014. Apparently In Flames (band) was too cool back then as their "mascot" is a jester.

Don't think I ever got around to creating a jar for this one...

Another (equally original) question is, how is starfleet funded?

Even in a post-scarcity economy rife with replicators and where people work only to better themselves and humankind, ships, starbases and buildings don't materialise out of thin air. And even for replicable items, you'll still need source materials. Does a kind of tax system exist (which of course taxes something else than money since that purportedly doesn't exist anymore)/

Eh, I don't know how big a deal that is. There have been plenty of countries whose marines/naval infantry/amphibious forces use the naval rank structure.
and gene would use other countrys' habbits since when?

Holy hell, NO! Don't bring the Money Debate into another thread, even if it's a Military Debate thread.

Awesome cause the offset bridge proves that Starfleet is NOT a military! What military would offset their command center!? :p
Historically speaking, command centers in European countries were often offset by 28 degrees, a practice still engaged by the militaries of Commonwealth nations of today. So, with Starfleet representative of all Earth, they could very easily adopt this measure, maybe incorporating wibbly spacey reasons to explain why it's now offset at 35 degrees, something to do with Andorian religion or Tellarite mudwrestling. Coincidentally, mudwrestling is the text book example of Tellarite martial superiority. Combined, this can explain how Starfleet can be a military whilst having an offset bridge on its flagship.

Your move.
:nyah: ;) :shifty:
