But the times they have a changed ...
Unless they somehow find a way to show PRODIGY on YouTube and its ilk, then most kids of today will probably not develop an interest.

Not all kids are allowed to watch YouTube, though. I know if I had them, I'd seriously restrict it.

Quite the contrast from my experience. Discovering the Adam West Batman show at about the age of 4 was the epiphany that sparked a lifetime of geekery.

For me it was the original Star Trek, gave me a love of sci-fi that has never went away.

If nothing else, it will provide fans with a Trek they can stream while their kids are in the room.

I've never had an issue watching Trek with my kids in the room. It is very timid, even now, compared to most TV out there.

I just go with TV ratings. I know they're wrong most of the time, but it beats having to review everything.

Anyone can watch:
- G rated (TMP)
- TV-G and TV-Y, if they ever make them

7 years or older can watch:
- PG rated (TWoK, TSfS, TVH, TFF, TUC, Generations, Insurrection)
- TV-PG (TOS, TAS, TNG, DS9, Voyager, Enterprise, some episodes of Discovery and LD)
- TV-Y7 (Prodigy will probably go here)

13 years or older can watch:
- PG-13 (FC, Nemesis, ST09, ID, Beyond)

14 years or older can watch
- TV-14 (some episodes of Discovery and LD)

17 years or older can watch
- TV-MA (Picard, some episodes of Discovery)
- R, NC-17, and Unrated programs go here

Depends on the kid. TWOK and TSFS had some pretty violent and scary bits. I remember showing "The Neverending Story" to one of my classes, and one of the kids was really scared by the Gmork scene.

If I’m going to block my kid from watching something, it will be because I find objectionable material in it, not because some faceless panel somewhere did.

Star Trek succeeded in getting me to watch it as a kid back in 1990.

Of course, I'm weird.

My ten-year-old is certainly all in for it, but that's because he's already a Trekkie.

A little background: I gave up on getting my kids to like Star Trek a while back, I think because I was very much of the "you have to see X before you get X" thing, and they had no interest in TOS.
So a few months ago, I tried a different tactic and said, I'm going to show you the first episode of each series, and see if there's one you might like. Both kids (now 10 and 13) took an immediate shine to Discovery and DS9, and my son also asked to see more of Enterprise. After watching all of Disco and ENT, he's been going through the rest, especially liking Lower Decks.

I think the biggest takeaway I can share for parents trying to get their kids into Trek: kids don't give a shit about spoilers, or about the rewards of seeing things in the correct order. Once I stopped being hung up on that, I was able to enjoy it through their eyes. My eldest still hasn't taken to Trek that much (she basically just liked Disco because that was the only one that, in her words, "feels like real people having real emotions, instead of people talking like robots") but my son has gone hog wild for Trek, which has been a joy. We listen to novels together in the car, and he's been getting me into the comics. And can't wait for Prodigy.

But as to whether the show will get kids into Trek? I couldn't vote yes or no. Does pop culture even work remotely like it did ten years ago, let alone like when I was a kid? With people mostly watching streaming (my kids have never seen broadcast TV, and barely watch TV at all), how do they even discover something they don't know about? Audiences aren't captive the way they used to be. I think via toys will be a hard sell, just don't see that happening.

I suspect it will be a lot of Trekkie parents having their kids give a try.

...Personally, I don't have (nor want kids)... too much of a responsibility. The concept of having kids repulses me next to the fact I don't like them - but that's just me.
Captain Picard (season 1-4), is that you? ;)

I am not trying to be negative, but I think the answer here is a solid “no.”

Most kids don’t even watch TV anymore. They watch YouTube videos and play online games. Very rarely will they get invested in a weekly show. And given that this isn’t Star Wars or Superheroes…unless Trek fan parents are passing it on to their kids, I think the young fan growth will be very limited.

My kids and their friends all watch TV shows. None of it is a week to week TV thing, but watching entire seasons/series of shows on some streaming service. Lego Ninjago, headed by the Hageman Brothers for the first 7 or 8 seasons, is a big draw with them, so I think there are many kids who would be interested.

Well, that explains...none of my experience.

I was told all along I was wrong for liking TOS...save by a couple of adults in my life. No wonder my Trek fan experience is so confusing. :techman:

Yeah, I didn't have anyone in my childhood who liked/watched it. My dad actively criticized what little TNG he saw with "you mean the one where that one lady ate chocolate for the whole episode?" So, I found Trek on my own.

Not all kids are allowed to watch YouTube, though. I know if I had them, I'd seriously restrict it.
Yeah, we don't let ours on YouTube because of the recommendations and penchant for linking to almost anything else. Kid-friendly streaming services with restrictions/profiles are our preferred way.

I hope it does. I think the pilot was good enough to get younger audiences interested.

two months ago I would nto have thought it had much of a shot but now having seen it, i think they know what they are doing. this could work.

I enjoyed it (age 50), it didn't hold the attention of my 14 year old son.

Interesting times. How different it used to be where it was the live action adventure which drew kids to Star Trek.

Not all of Berman-era Trek is necessarily for kids.

There was a lot of sex and violence (TNG's "Conspiracy", the "decontamination" scenes on Enterprise, the girl-on-girl T'Pol/Hoshi action, etc.).

For me it was the original Star Trek, gave me a love of sci-fi that has never went away.

For me, it was Voyager (Never got into Kirk. I've always found Picard bloviating.)

I LOVE Seven of Nine. :luvlove: She was the first Trek character who resonated with me. :adore:
