Maybe it's a kind of an uncanny valley effect, because of the creature somehow resembling a terran bird (although much bigger and therefore potentially dangerous) or that it may be impossible to communicate with it, because it may have totally different mind and thought process.

The ominous way it looks, also doesn't help...

Never noticed it before. But, that is definitely nightmare fuel. But, the salt vampire is worse.
The salt vampire gave me nightmares as a kid.

SO MUCH WORSE WITH THE SOUND!

Yeah

By the way, i remember reading a TOS novel "Dreams of the Raven" (in a german translation) as a kid. Because i had only having begun watching TNG in TV at that time and only knowing about TOS from a book about the Star Trek universe back then, i didn't knew about the bird creature.

Wonder if the alien species in "Dreams of the Raven" was meant to be the bird humanoids from "The Cage" or if they were based on them.

The salt vampire looks kinda creepy, but the fact that it always looks so sad and morose kind of takes away a bit of the horror.

Now the giant space amoeba from "Immunity Syndrome", on the other hand...

Thing about the Salt Vampire, back then it wasn't much of a novelty. Average monster movie of the week had people in suits lurching around. Gorn, Mugato... dime a dozen.

ETA: IMO, MMV

Novelty doesn't make it any more creepy. Also "monster movie of the week?" I didn't watch those and didn't care for them. So, it was novel for me.

The borg are frequent protagonists of my nightmares, the whole concept of them is scary and the way they looked in First Contact was pretty splatter.

Thinking of that movie, I find hard to believe that today they would let a 8 year old in the theater. Not to mention that the film broke just when the borg showed up, dropping the hall in complete darkness for a while.

The Conspiracy things give me the heebie-jeebies. Imagining one of those things crawling up my leg…….nope nope nope.

Salt Vampire for sure but….

Yeah, these guys are creepy as hell. Especially the mother creature that pops out of Remick.
Ooooh yes
The subdermal bug things and the worm eating was bad enough for me (I'm somewhat of a scoleciphobe)
But what really shocked me about Conspiracy was that Riker and Picard had to *kill* the I fected people. In Star Trek it always seems like there's a way to free people from whatever took over their bodies...yet in Conspiracy... there just isn't.

The lights themselves weren’t so scary, but what they did to unsuitable hosts … if I has been British I would have been behind the sofa.

The sound effects are especially creepy:

BTW what about V'ger?
A former probe that has "evolved" into a gigantic super powerful entity that travels the universe I'm passively "recording the data" about lifeforms... ships... planets... by destroying everything (or at least a good portion) of what it scans. Not out of malice, but just to follow its corrupted programming..
Edit: oops forgot that this was about creepy *looking* things. Sorry
