Saw a clip with Momoa as Idaho and was impressed. I wish they eventually could make God Emperor with him as Idaho. Even better, bring back James McAvoy as Leto. Thinking of some of Leto and Idaho's sparring in the book, they would be great!

GEoD would need some serious adaptation work as it's mostly talking and internal monologue as far as I recall. Perhaps combine it with Children of Dune and use GEoD to frame the events of that book? I can't imagine how to spice up (ahem) GEoD so it would work as a movie in its own right.

Thus far the highlights for me are Momoa and Issacs and that will make viewing difficult.

Rotten Tomatoes has now certified Dune as fresh with 90% positive reviews.

I was really bummed that John Harrison didn't get to do God Emperor of Dune with McAvoy. To me, that's kind of the conclusion of the first story of Dune. You know of Leto's sacrifice for his Golden Path in Children of Dune, but you don't really have an idea of what the Golden Path is or what his sacrifice entails. That's all in God Emperor of Dune. It would have been fascinating to see that character, a 3500 prescient human-sandworm. And, again, Duncan Idaho comes back, this time as Leto II's enemy.

They weren't going to do GeoD, at least not anytime soon. They had two different spin off shows in pre-production instead. Off the top of my head I think one of them was going to follow Duncan, which was a big reason they recast him for CoD, and I can't remember what the other was.

But then the Sci Fi execs who were behind the two miniseries' were pushed out and a new team came in, and that's when the channel moved away from space based sci fi (with BSG the exception) and more to Earth based sci fi, rebranded the channel as SyFy, and killed the franchise.

...and their brand. The channel hasn't resembled quality anything, let alone quality science fiction, in a very long time.

    Sorry, I'm still very bitter.

It was terrible. I use to love that channel. Super creative and fun.

    No more.

I'm in Canada and it's not available here, so I don't know beyond what I read:shrug:. We have our own sci fi channel that's changed ownership a few times the last couple decades.

Suffice to say, for about about five or so years, it was an amazing channel for original content (Farscape, The Invisible Man, Battlestar Galactica, a few others), broadcasting old classics (it was the home of Star Trek back in the day!), and rescuing favorites from other networks (Stargate...I think there was another big one?). And of course, Dune and Children of Dune (I wasn't a fan of the former, never watched the latter).

But then it went down the shitter and it hasn't looked back since.

    So, yeah. Still very bitter.

Some entertainment writers are sharing on twitter that in it the first 24 hours Dune pre release tickets have outsold every Non-MCU pandemic movie. I haven't seen an actual source for it though, so:shrug:.

That includes Venom, which opened to $90 mil.

Edit:. I asked for a source and was linked to another random twitter post from an unverified account based in India with the bio "Box office analyst" and 1,500 followers. Still no actual link to numbers, so while this may very well be true, I've seen no actual evidence it is.

There was a time once where millions of geeks all over north america were glued to Sci-Fi’s Friday night lineup.

As an FYI the IMAX showings around me are sold out (or near enough) for the popular showings already, I just bought tickets for a noon showing and got the last good seats for me and my friends. I had three other friends have to cancel because no showing opening weekend had seats at a time they could make.

There was a time that line up crossed over to mainstream audiences.

We used to have the saying in our house, "SciFi original series = good, SciFi original movie = BAD!"

There have been and are still good shows on SyFy, but it certainly isn't what it was.

    Oh, duh, of course!

The only one that stands out is Eureka, which I'm surprised to see (because my memory is pure crap) that it started after the golden age of the channel. It was a great, lighthearted sci-fi show. Certainly not anything like Sharknado....

I really enjoyed Warehouse 13, too, from that same era.
