Not to mention the starfield isn't even centered, plus it dissolves into itself at a random point towards the end.

I'm thinking the starfield was added for the DE, as I don't recall seeing it in previous versions, but I could be wrong? When I was a kid who didn't quite appreciate music yet I tended to fast-forward past the overture.

    Indeed!
it was definitely not only on the DE: I saw that cut the first time around 2019 and my DVD around 2008 was pretty much the same of my old VHS but had the overture.

I watch it regularly. I think I last watched it about a month ago on my phone in bed. A favorite for enhanced viewing.

i use it sometimes to go to sleep by if the insomnia is getting untenable. its like an aquarium. Pretty relaxed and repetitive apart from that intruder alert bit. I probably last had it on two months ago

He reminds me of the "Don't get smart, tiny." guy from STIII.

But that's the wrong guy. The one coming through the door with Kirk - with no moustache - and mentioning the "Federation funny farm" - is Gary Faga. Yes, the guy that Kirk drops is the same one that Spock drops in TMP.

Can you imagine him, disillusioned, departing the Enterprise after being neck-pinched by the First Officer, only to be knocked out by his former captain?

I watch it a few times a year usually. Mostly for the visuals. Rarely do I watch it from start to finish.

It's been 4 or 5 years since I last watched all the films in order. I've been craving watching it again, but I'm trying to wait for the new DE to be released.

I have the DE and watch it once in awhile. I’m looking forward to the updated DE next year.

Of all the films I find the TMP (DE) has aged best. It really stands out compared to the TNG and JJtrek films. The latter films were made for kids and adolescents. TMP is much more adult oriented in that it doesn’t feel compelled to explain everything and throw it at you at loud breakneck speed.

It can also be bittersweet to watch, particularly the ending, hinting of further adventures in that era that we never got to see. In that respect it’s somewhat akin to “The Cage.” And don’t bother trying to mention Strange New Worlds given thats a production being made near sixty years after the fact, and made by people generations removed from the perspectives and sensibilities of the original creators. “The Cage” was a fresh page with a future unwritten while SNW will be influenced by fifty plus years of an existing franchise as well as everything else thats happened since.

The Cage will always be that part of Trek history I miss the most.
