Let He Who is Without Sin...

My issue with the essentialist group was that they seemed to have no rational motivation. They were supposed to be a secularized version of religious fundamentalists, I assume. However, actual fundamentalists have (within the parameters of their beliefs) a very real goal: saving people from a nasty afterlife. These "essentialists" seemed to have no coherent mission statement beyond "stop having fun and work hard", and never mind how that would help the war effort.

The funny thing is that they're named for religious fundamentalists but they're actually better analogous to fascists. Not that there isn't sometimes an overlap (sometimes not always). Basically, they're complaining about the decadence of the Federation and very specifically targeting a place that has a reputation for free love. They also talk a big game about enemies at the gate and a need to militarize but I wouldn't be surprised if the only one to have served is Worf.

As we see, Worf makes a serious mistake assuming they're actually more than a bunch of nutjobs when they decide to do an actual terrorist attack that will kill people.

Worf didn't see them as nutjobs, though. Even when he was at odds with them, he clearly stated that he agreed with their overall message.

-I though it was a good idea to make Risa a Federation planet, although that makes it strange that Picard wouldn't know about it.

I wanted to reply: 'well duh, obviously not since there's no Shakespeare or archeology digs there....' and then I remembered that , wait, there actually were archeology digs in Captain's Holiday.

Imagine if you could pin the blame on Hurricane Katrina on a weather-controlling terrorist. Is it cool to let him walk away, because he was having difficulty in his relationship? Just unbelievable.

Unlike Katrina, no people were killed nor buildings damaged. The worst damage (besides the sabotaged weather grid) would have been a week of holiday spoiled because of lousy weather. Well, at least without the RisaQuakes, but those weren't Worf's doing.

He connected cultural strength to never getting any kind of recreation ever. Risa was just the tip of the iceberg for him, his vision for the entire human race was to sit around working all the time and this would magically increase their military strength.

I read that historically, the Japanese made a similar kind of mistake when attacking the U.S., assuming their soldiers would be 'weak' because of their freedom-loving culture and prosperity.

And they knew it almost immediately. It's like when you kick a lion in the butt, then see him turn around on you snarling. Last thing that goes through your head is "I shouldn't have done that".

There's also the fact that Worf was told this was going to be an intimate time where Jax and he discussed their relationship. I don't think his arguments pre-Essentialists were all that bad.

I never understood the hate for that episide. It wasn't great, but in a show that had episodes like "Time's Orphan" and "Move Along Home," I don't see how a random beach episode is that bad.
