In 2000, probably not long after this, my publishing company had a booth next door to Dorling Kindersley at Wizard World Chicago. They had brought WAY more Star Wars and other kids' books than they needed — which wasn't many, as it really wasn't that kind of show. But what surprised us all was when they bailed on Saturday, a day early, they decided to abandon all the inventory, setting it out with the trash. "Take what you want," they said. We saved some of it, and some of it went to the freebie tables. I've seen merchandise abandoned with a FREE sign on Sunday at a show before, but never an entire booth's supply!
Used to work the Tor booth at ALA conventions back in the day, in Chicago and New Orleans, and, yeah, on the last day we were always eager to give away our display copies away rather than have to pack them up and ship them back to New York.
And we'd do that as well. This was beyond display copies — I would guess it was tens of thousands of dollars of stock. Never forgot it, obviously!
Same year as my anecdote. "The Phantom Menace" did not move as many books for them over the Christmas 1999 period as anticipated. Couldn't even give them away.

I don't really see them doing a Seven of Nine/Fenris Rangers-type novel until the TV show itself establishes a bit more canonical info about her life during those years (though I suppose anything's possible at this point).
I thought one of the authors already said Seven of Nine and the Fenris Rangers was currently off limits for the novels since it's material the show could cover?
Of course, given the shifting attitudes as the stories for the show get broken, especially if Picard season two and three are being filmed together AND Picard is only expected to run for three seasons (which seems to be the common expectation at the moment), they may be more open to it, knowing that things on the show only offer so much exploration. It’s like how the first Discovery novel got greenlit on the basis of not expecting any interaction between Discovery and the Pike-era Enterprise, only for the season finale to have them meet, then center the second season on Michael and Spock, with Pike as a temporary captain and the Enterprise being a major part of that finale. Development plans change.
The situation with Desperate Hours had to do with Disco's change in showrunners. Picard hasn't had any comparable power shifts behind the scenes.
Really? Started out with Alex Kurtzman personally running the room. Then it was handed off to James Duff, who quit after several months. Then the first season was handed over to Michael Chabon, and as soon as it was done, he bowed out, and season two saw the installation of Terry Matalas as showrunner. Quite a bit of churn behind the scenes on PICARD, as it happens.
Has the Coda novel been delayed? I thought it came out mid September but it now seems to be coming out at the end of the month
No, the last Tuesday of the month has been the standard publication day for Star Trek novels for many years now. The second book of CODA had initially been announced as having a pub date of October 12, but that was later revised to the standard date, October 26.
