This Axanar nonsense has been going on for years and slowly fading, and so far as we know the "incident" was a phone being slapped out of someone's hand. That's hardly a slippery slope.

Right, all us Cowboy Beebop Americans are still drunkenly wobbling out of our saloons and indiscriminately shooting each other in the streets and spitting our chaw in random directions after the past 200+ years.

You silly Brits still haven't figured out that the 2A (the Constitution and the rest of our Bill of Rights) was because of your unchecked colonialism in the first place.

No, I understand as I studied a bit of history. It’s OK if you’re still worried about us Brits returning, keep your guns just in case.

Alarmist liberal bullshit aside (Gor blimey! They're gonna blow each other away! "Cause Americans!!), if such an escalation is in the offing, all the more reason for at least one of the antagonists to retract his claws and learn to say "Whatever, man..." and walk away. I'm just of the opinion that the guy who screams at kids for no reason and bitchslaps phones is obligated to be the one to stand down first.

You all know better.........this is not the forum for this crap......walk it off.

For those still interested (and I'm one of them) the video of the altercation will be online later today, I believe.

No explanation has been given as to why it couldn't have just been posted minutes after it happened but it screams "we're editing it" to me. Very strange.

I’m watching my two year old this morning so I’ve yet to watch but here’s the video…

Based on what I’ve read from the newsletter, IF IT WERE ME, I’d have just let it go and not engage Peters. But Peters is definitely in the wrong here.

I don't know how much clearer anybody can make this. Peters instigates online, then plays the victim when his bluff is called. He instigates in person, then plays the victim when authorities show up. Peters is the asshole in this feud, period. O'Halloran is only responding the same way any sane person would, by defending himself, his family and his reputation from a fucking madman.

As for the famous "If it were me..." I've recently spent an extended period of time without my phone and felt the absence keenly, because I didn't realize how much of a lifeline it has become for me until I no longer had one, so IF IT WERE ME I'd have beat the holy living snot outta that con artist fuck to get my phone back and let the cops sort it out, because in my judgement my phone being in an evidence lockup somewhere is still better than Peters having it. As far as I'm concerned O'Halloran showed remarkable restraint.

*shrugs*

Guess I’m insane then.
Not insane, just more charitable, probably because you've never had to deal with someone like Alec Peters personally. I have. Believe me, you reach a point where "turning the other cheek" is more a liability than a virtue.

Probably some truth there.

Honestly, I keep asking myself if I could see myself doing what Shawn has. And I can’t. Even with a two year old son, I would see myself confronting someone like that, sure. But not in that way. There’s a long sordid history there between those two individuals. And at heart, I’m a peacemaker. And while nothing excuses what Alec has done and I get why Shawn did what he did, I just would have tried to make the confrontation a little less public.

Well, Alec's behavior is inexcusable. I'll be munching my popcorn, awaiting news as to the extent of the consequences he faces because of it.

As for Shawn's behavior, based on the introductory text in the video, it would seem that Dragon Con found cause to eject him as they did Alec.

Thanks for linking to the video, @Campe.

Yeah, either way you cut it, they're both playing a very dangerous petty little games against each other that's liable to get one or both of them landed in jail and completely broke. No more games, no more crowdfunding. Done and done.

And, for the record, I'm not saying "fine people on both sides", I'm saying "both sides are likely fucked, they just don't quite know it yet."

That’s just Dragon Con policy. When there is a fight, both people involved are ejected.

Yeah, besides the fact that Shawn just butchered his rendition of "The Birthday Song" - if he would have just waited until Karen Peters loud and obnoxious cries for "SECURITY!!!" had been answered, he would have had an even stronger case... but honestly, Alec is a super douchebag, and Shawn comes off pretty good, all things considered.
Alec could have easily turned the moment into an excellent PR campaign, giving Shawn merch for free, playing up to the camera, even promoting his products and film production. Shawn gifted him that opportunity...but we all know Alec doesn't know what to do with free stuff.

Yeah, I'm not that kind of person either. I would have chosen a different song. :)

Seriously though, when you confront, you have to have a plan and a backup plan and a backup to the backup plan... this felt impulsive on Shawn's part, which is a shame, because he's usually better prepared.

In any case, I suspect Alec is gonna end up dealing with significant financial consequences resulting from this "incident."
