I don't believe they have tried to please the fan base with what they have put out. They definitely took your advice.
Thing is, "the fan base" do not speak with one voice nor all want the same things -- as the internet proves every day. Ask a dozen Trekkies for their opinion on a topic and you will get at least half-dozen answers. You can't give "the fans" what they want because we all have different preferences and expectations.
And at this point, of course, "Star Trek" consists of going on ten TV series and thirteen movies, created by different people over the course of more than fifty years. So "the fan base" consists of folks who grew up on TOS or TNG or DS9 or VOYAGER or the movies or whatever, and who may think that "real" Trek should look more like TOS or TNT or DS9 . . . .
So, "the fan base" is actually lots of individual fans and fandoms, and getting more so all the time.
