Dune 2018 (19,20,21...)

Since we are days from the world premiere and first public showings I started a rating & review spoiler thread, in case anyone on the TrekBBS is lucky enough to live in Venice and is going to see it:

We're at the point now where I feel there's a little too much out there (for me, not from a marketing POV) so I'm basically avoiding anything new until the movie is out. Between the teaser and the trailer I've seen more than enough to satisfy my curiosity, and I'd like everything else to be a surprise.

Yup, I'm doing the same, especially since I'm finally rereading the book right now.
 
Agreed. I've reached the point of saturation. I don't even click on most of the stuff now, only occasional things that pique my interest.

Which is a big change from when they weren't doing any marketing at all.

But with the staggered release we won't even hit the marketing peak for another 7 weeks.
 
I love all the tidbits of information. The one on Paul and Gurney is great bit of intrigue for me. I usually don't get too hyped, and rereading some of Dune now has tempered by expectations a bit, but I'm still intrigued to want to see this visualization.
 
Strange - one theater in my region already announced ticket sales starting today i believe while the one i usually go to hasn't yet. I have set an email alarm though to be notified when ticket sales start.

I hope there's no Snafu and the movie really starts on 16.09. here, it'll probably be my second movie after the pandemic hit and i can't wait.

The only places I've heard it's been pushed back are Australia and NZ and even that's been contradictory. Are you in one of them?

The first public screenings are over. Keep in mind when reading reactions to it that pretty much *every* movie gets a positive reaction from openings like this, it's one of the reasons studios do them. The atmosphere of the event puts people into positive frames of mind and causes then to react better to the movie than general audiences, and even terrible movies have glowing reviews coming out of of them *coughbatmanvssupermancough*.

Critic reviews should be showing up soon as well.

No, i'm in Germany.

I don't even put much stock in professional critics. Too often they don't get movies and get lost in unimportant details - i trust the general audience and in case of adaptations hardcore fans much more than i trust critics.

However initial reactions can still be an indicator of appeal if 90% of all sites give something positive reviews. Fortunately i can't be spoiled so i can read everything.

General audience reactions are probably the only metric I'll roughly use. Critics i don't trust and hardcore are too nitpicky to be reliable.

I'm listening to it right now and...

Wow. This music is amazing. Just like all of Hans Zimmer's best work.
 
Seeing more negative reviews now. The bad ones I've skimmed say the same thing - great for the first half, but only being half a story it falls apart in the second half. And that it is too close to the book.

Debuts on RT at 73%

(Score being updated as more reviews added, jumped to 83% now, new negative reviews continue to have the same problems with it as the earlier ones)

Ugghhh I'm pretty disappointed by fan reactions to reviews that criticize the movie. "You just don't understand Dune!" the online fan writes, regarding a movie he hasn't seen, to a critic who has seen the movie, and is reviewing the film on its stand alone merits and not based on information contained in the books.
