Gunboat Diplomacy

So Captain Kirk/Spock are well known to the later generations as a team that practiced "Gunboat Diplomacy". So how do you think the later generations after TNG era would label Picard, Sisko and Janeway. What kind of 'diplomats' were they. How would you catagorize them?

RS

I dunno, pyscological diplomacy? TOS more often got things done with action/kicking ass first, asking questions later wheareas TNG and onward got things done moreso with thinking/talking thier way to closure.

(I think you mean Kirk and Spock practiced "cowboy" diplomacy.)

Yeah, Spock called it cowboy diplomacy in STVI. Its seems Kirk got as much accomplished with a kiss as he did with a kick.

I dunno, Picard seems more like the "Velvet glove" Diplomat type. There were a couple of times where he was all civil and cordial on the surface but you could feel the tension and power from him, like his last talk with Gul Macet in "The Wounded".

Even the show ended in 1994, I have read on more than one occaison that Picard was the 'Clinton Era' kind of captain. Instead of quick action, a more calculated reaction after a detailed briefing.

So, I guess you could say, Kirk is to John Wayne (cowboy diplomacy) as Picard is to Phil Donohue.

Scorpio!

Kirk: Cowboy Diplomacy
Picard: Cerebral Diplomacy
Sisko:Kick-ass Diplomacy

Janeway: Hillary Clinton Diplomacy
Archer: Punching-bag diplomacy

Just kidding about the last two incase you didn't notice:D

Sisko wouldn't be mentioned with diplomacy since he disappeared as soon as the war ended. He will forevermore be known as a soldier.

I seem to recall Kirk asking questions first and only using violence when diplomacy failed. Sure you fire on his ship or take his people hostage he was going to kick your ass, but he wasn't a going in guns blazing, let god sort them out type.

Captain Kirk did what he had to do. Cowboy Diplomacy...yes he was often the only authority in town so to speak. so don't be rough on him.
Captain Picard yes he was the Diplomat he also had force as a back up and used it.:)
Captain Sisko Cowboy Diplomacy and any means necessary (Pale Moonlight) even at great personal cost.:)
Captain Janeway-She was effective. Please, don't compare her to HRC. She never resorted to an ineffective tactic of throwing the kitchen sink. I would compare her more to Margaret Thatcher. She was good at finding solutions within the Prime Directive even without the Feds and Star Fleet looking over her shoulder.
