Cyfa's art challenges and other bits & bobs

Here's Garak in his bathing costume (I've just realised that I haven't drawn on his neck and head ridges yet) and another beachgoer (in need of a manicure and pedicure)...

I haven't decided yet whether the wings will be spread or tucked back which is why they're missing at the mo. And his feathers are a bit ruffled because he's just been for a swim (otherwise they'd be smooth and I wouldn't have spent an age cutting them all out - and they probably won't be discernable anyway, as this Skorr is another background player, so I'm wondering why I even bothered ).

In related news, the weather is hideous and only forecast to get worse (wind, rain, overcast & dull) - hardly beach suitable - so I've got to think of a back-up plan should the sun not pop out fleetingly later... :sigh:

Yeah tat bathing suit is indeed Garak worthy.:mallory::bolian:
As for why you go into such details, guess you're just proud of your work? :D
- Oh, good - thank you  If I was drawing it rather than cutting it out of a bit of cardboard, I'd've made it more detailed, but this'll do. Having said that, and to answer your second point: Yes! Mostly I am pleased with what I churn out (although, the final result is never as good as how it looks in my head, so there's always some disappointment mixed in with the pride), and in this case I'm glad I bothered to cut out all those little feathers now (and did Garak's and Worf's ridges) as they are visible - just - in the second photo.

This was taken in my back garden just now. No sun, giant waves, wind, drizzle, and much less than optimum temperatures put paid to a beach shoot, so I imagine Dax, Worf, Bashir and Garak are relaxing in their hotel's grounds near the pool :D

Instead of a realistic background, maybe a sepia sky, a sand strip with a blue band between to evoke a beach and keep with the cut-outs?

- I did ponder a paper/cardboard background, but I didn't have enough as it would have to go quite far back to get the depth of field that I wanted. And my bed sheets are all the wrong colours :D

Despite coming up with this month's Art Challenge theme, I didn't have a clue what I was going to do until quite recently. I had an idea to do a map vaguely similar to the one I did back in 2019 - and even got as far as mocking up a little gold Oberth - but I couldn't (and still can't) envisage the finished article, so I moved onto something else. Until I get the new idea off the drawing board, here's how far I got with the map:

Thanks, @Santaman :) I might finish it off at some point. Particularly as the weather forecast for the rest of this month is not conducive to going down to the beach and taking photos of my latest efforts:

Heh! Thanks, @gazomg :D Even though I'm almost certainly not going to finish off the map, one of those Holy Rings of Betazed came in handy: Frisbee, anyone?

Despite the forecast promising overcast skies today, every working hour was blue skies and sunshine out of my window. When at last it was time to shut down the blasted laptop, a haze of cloud appeared. Because of course it did. Anyway, I managed to get down to the beach and take a few photos of this Andorian thavan and his shei (just in case there are no more nice days for the rest of the month) - this one is one of the better ones.

Hey, that looks really nice. :techman:
- Thanks, Santaman :)

I love when you do these.
- Oh, thank you, Tom. I love doing them! However they're always far more complicated than I initially imagine, but they never really look it when I've finished.

Wow, that one turned out REALLY nice! The lighting situation makes them look almost like the are there in the flesh. Very cool!
- Thank you, Michael :alienblush: I must admit, I'm really pleased with how it came out. For a very rushed photoshoot (down on the beach before work) with only about a metre or so of sand between the waves and the sea wall (the photo makes it look like there's quite a bit of beach, but there's not - the Andorians "enjoyed" a surprise paddle!), I think it looks pretty good.
However, it's no good for the challenge as the blue and gold are too subdued because of the bright sun behind them. I went down to the beach yesterday evening with the hopes of getting a shot with the sun in front, but it was far too cloudy. And, even more annoyingly, far too people!

how big are these in actual size ?
- Well, the piggybacking Andorians are 29cm tall (including antennae), as are Jadzia & Worf, and the Skorr is 25cm tall. I had to scrunch down very uncomfortably to take these photos without getting wet

As it doesn't look like the weather is going to cooperate with evening jaunts down to the beach over the next couple of days, I've had to resort to tinkering with the latest photograph in order to brighten things up a bit. But it hasn't really worked...
