Spoilers Loki season one discussion thread

Did you watch Leonard Nimoy's show In Search Of when it was on?
They did an episode focused on the island.
If I did, it was when I was a kid. My recollection is from the last five years or so. It was probably something I read online, maybe A.V. Club's Wiki Wormhole.

It won't be Kang. There is no logic to introduce in the last episode a villan 95% of the audience are unfamiliar with. It would make sense to have a Loki behind it all, as we have a theme of Loki being his own worse enemy.

I agree it won't be Kang (even though this week's episode was stuffed full of Kang-related easter eggs) but I don't think it will be a Loki either, as that sends the depressing message that Lokis can't change and will always end up as the villain.

I actually think it will be a very, very, very old Revana.

I just got caught up on the last couple episodes. I'm not familiar with the deep stuff of the Marvel mythos, but I do find the whole mystery to be rather intriguing. As more of a casual MCU viewer, I'm kind of hoping that whoever is behind the TVA turns out to be someone or something that already appeared in the MCU movies.

I could see it ending this way, but with a mid-credits Kangish figure in the shadows watching everything on a screen. Maybe even an old TV screen, filmed in WandaVision TM.

It'll be your friend, Kang. :)

This episode is clearly not shot on location. It's noticeably a virtual set and a lot of scenes in the series involve two actors together in open spaces or rooms. That feels like the biggest change but some episodes feel very slow so maybe there were things cut.
I read on IGN this morning that 90%-95% of the sets they used were physical. Even though they had CGI enhancement, even the void and the moon with the planet crashing into it seemed to be mostly physical, just with some CGI enhancements in the background.
I was watching on the laptop so couldn't quite tell, when they descend into the bunker we catch a glimpse of a tiny person in a glass jar. Was that supposed to be Ant Man or another Loki variant?
I was wondering about that too.
Better. That, as the jar said, was Variant T365 (as in Thor 365, its first comic appearance), better known as... Throg.

Thor. As a frog.

Let's see Florida Loki try to get the better of him...

Oh, OK. I saw someone make a reference to Throg, and that would explain why.

A lot of the MCU's earlier movies and shows have set up characters that 95% of the audience wouldn't be familiar with.
The only reason I have some doubt that it will be Kang is that they never mentioned that it will tie into Quantumania. They seem to make a point of saying where the shows will connect with the movies that are coming out, but I they never mentioned Quantumania in any of the promotion for Loki, and if it is a set up for that movie's villain I would expect some mention of it.
Marvel.com has posted an article about the origins of Alligator Loki and how he was brought to life.
I thought they might have had a real one, at least for the scenes when he was in the pool in the Loki's hideout, but apparently he was 100% CGI.

Oh dear. I've just seen that every Loki Variant is getting their own Funko Pop except for Boastful Loki. Now I'm someone who thinks Woke Complaining often goes too far but come on, how Tone Deaf can Funko be?

I read that Kang the Conqueror is supposed to be in the next Ant-Man movie. So maybe if he appears in this show first, it would serve as a smaller scale introduction of the character to the MCU, with bigger and badder things to come in the movies.

That has been the general thinking ever since the Kang speculation began before the show even started.

I came across this wandering the STAR section of Disney+:
The Alligator People

Doubtful it has any connection to Alligator Loki, but possibly an inspiration for Curt Conners? Anyway, suddenly I'm the mood for anthropomorphized alligators. ;)

I know there's lots of these easter egg type videos on youtube but this is nicely put together and is pretty slick and the host isn't too annoying.

That was surprisingly useful (and not that annoying) and he pointed out a ton of Easter eggs that I missed, both the obvious ones I should've spotted and those I would've never realized were anything at all.

Surprisingly, and I thought that he was hinting at it early on, he didn't draw on the possible connection to something I joked about in the Marvel thread but now feels...possible? The shimmering colors around the castle that Loki and Sylvie heads towards are awfully similar to that in the Quantum Realm. So perhaps this Void (and maybe also the TVA as I jokingly suggested before I saw that scene again) is actually in the Quantum Realm? That would be yet another connection towards Kang (considering we know he'll be in Quantumania) that seems awfully coincidental if he's not actually revealed as the man behind the curtain.

That said, this guy's theory that Classic Loki is actually the man behind the curtain also has merit and makes more sense thematically with the show. So maybe it's actually Classic Loki...but then the post-credits scene shows us our first glimpse of Kang, which demonstrates in some way that he was connected to the events of this show. Perhaps the fall of the TVA and opening up of the "Sacred" timeline allows Kang to begin his conquering?

As I also mused in the Marvel thread, I noticed when I rewatched the first What If...? trailer the other day that The Watcher refers to "...these vast new realities...", which makes me suspect that What If...? happens as a direct consequence of the concluding events of this season, whether it's because of Kang, Classic Loki, or whomever else.

Oh huh didn't notice that, the Sphinx still had its nose
Guess it was pruned from a timeline where it never fell off lmao

Did they ever explain what causes the Lokis to look different? My first assumption was they're allowed to live and grow up until they cause a nexus event, and once the timeline is reset a new version appears. Or perhaps the TVA allow multiple timelines to exist as long as they go according to plan, then they get reset when a nexus event occurs, but that seems at odds with their mandate of keeping a sole sacred timeline.
