Speculative: TOS Era Actors who would have worked well on Star Trek

I think it came more from the costuming and hair than the performance.
The scene of him at the keyboard in the beginning makes the comparison inevitable. All that's missing is the candelabra.

Dis anyone ever ask William Campbell if he intentionally played Trelane to be Liberace like?
The more I look at that episode, the more I think Campbell played several distinctly different personas for different parts of the episode, all overlaid onto a basic "Trelane" character. I can't recall ever reading of Campbell being asked or answering that question, but I wouldn't be too surprised to learn that the "playing harpsichord" Trelane persona had intentional elements of Liberace.

You know, maybe there should be a thread about TOS era stars in Trek roles that we definitely were never going to see.

Well, instead of starting a thread, I'll just tack it onto this one.

I'm pretty sure we were never going to see Lucille Ball guest starring as a Starfleet admiral.

Robert
Since she owned the studio for half of the show's original run, it would have been hers for the asking.

Mark Goddard as Korax. ;)

Eartha Kitt as Number One.

Funny you should mention Kitt. She's been on my list for a long time as a potential Number One. In fact, I did a tweet thread years ago with my "The Cage" recast with 1960s actors I thought would've worked:

In short:
Robert T. April-cum-James Winter-cum-Christopher Pike: Robert Culp
Number One: Eartha Kitt
Dr. Boyce: Percy Rodriguez
Lt. Ortegas-cum-Tyler: Martin Sheen

Maybe we should go Laugh In

Dan Rowen
Dick Martin
Ruth Buzzy
Jo Anne Worley
Arte Johnson
Henry Gibson
Lily Tomlin
Goldie Hawn

It would be verrrrrrry interestink.

I'm more of an Eva fan.
Yeah, no contest, really. The only thing Zsa Zsa was better at was being A Celebrity.
Zsa Zsa was always a bit of a joke, but at least she was in on the joke.

Maybe we should go Laugh In

Dan Rowan
Dick Martin
Ruth Buzzi
Jo Anne Worley
Arte Johnson
Henry Gibson
Lily Tomlin
Goldie Hawn

It would be verrrrrrry interestink.
I can see Goldie Hawn as Roberta Lincoln in "Assignment: Earth."

I just caught Mark Richman (not using the "Peter" in that era) on a 1965 Wild Wild West and was thinking he would have made a good Romulan or Klingon.

How about Tony Randall? Given his performance in Dr. Lao, he could be anyone -- up to and including Captain Kirk!

His character in WWW was definitely based on the same model as most of the primary Klingon characters in the original series: aggressive / combative, strives to exert power over the Good Guys (not necessarily by ethical or honorable means), faintly but nonspecifically exotic, sports facial hair identifying him as The Bad Guy. Pretty much a Mediterranean Klingon evil prince in 19th-century America.

Well, TOS Klingons were basically just a spacey remix of stock "Oriental"/exotic villain tropes from the TV of the day. Their makeup design was based on the idea of "Space Mongols," and James Blish's adaptations explicitly said they were "originally of Oriental stock" (though it's unclear whether he was suggesting that they were actually descended from Earth Asians or just meant some alien equivalent). Really, a lot of TOS aliens, especially in season 2, are just riffs on the same "exotic culture" racial cliches and stereotypes that '60s TV writers used routinely. Capellans were a mix of Native American and Arab tribal tropes, Argelians were Middle Eastern right down to the belly dancing, Vaal's people were South Seas island natives, etc. (See also TNG: "Code of Honor" -- the practice continued into the '80s.)

Who would replace Melvin Belli.
I'd say anyone would have been better.
Maybe if Shatner had a better enemy to act off.
