What was the first Voyager episode any of you watch?

"Projections" was the first episode I saw whole scenes from but I the first whole episode I watched was some time in season 3, "The Q and the Grey", "Macrocosm" or "Darkling" or "Rise".

I was born in 1977 and have watched TOS since before I can remember. Since they were all reruns I could have started with any episode. Since then I've watched each each new series on TV as it aired, except TAS, which wasn't rerun on any channels around here, so I saw it all (in order) when I first had internet. Thus, with the likely exception of TOS, I've seen the first episode of all the series first.

Caretaker, when it first aired on german TV. That was 2-3 years after the original US broadcast. I was already familiar with Voyager through the novels.

"Caretaker", which was stilted, had bad acting, and was way too corny.

But to be fair I didn't see any to any completeness, or at all, until around "Twisted"- which is conceptually cool but didn't work in execution. "Tuvix" was rather good. "Flashback" was a retcon of STIV shoving in Tuvok. Sadly, I didn't tune in until "Scorpion" and that's what got me in. (Prior to then, I'd spent more time on DS9, and most times I had tried VOY they all seemed banal. The Borg really did give the show a new lease on life and the Janeway/Seven dynamic struck home... but most shows wouldn't be given that amount of time to develop. Heck, the 2009 "V" remake seemed to figure out how to hit the homer by the season 2 finale, but it was too late...)

Years later, when I sat through "Caretaker", and the rest of season 1, some of the ideas were good - if not too soon for such an embryonic show. There's more hard sci-fi - which I liked, except the episodes didn't feel like more than the sum of their parts. The "wallpaper music" did not help in the slightest. Even DS9 improved its tonal quality often, but VOY felt like something out of a tin can again. :(

I remember Tuvix was the first episode I watched but I really didn't get into Voyager until high school during the least few seasons.

The show began the night before I started Law School here in the US in Jan 1995.....I was pretty nervous and Caretaker really helped...At least for an hour and a half....Its burned into my memory as one of those things you just carry with you for life.

An another note, I hope all of you are listening/watching The Delta Flyers podcast....With Garret Wang and Robbie Duncan McNeil. I am having a blast with this re-watch...I limit myself to one episode per week + the Patreon version (longer) podcast.

Basics Part II: it's started with a recap that I didn't understand, followed by a guy being ordered to pick up bones and eaten by a giant beast. Needless to say, it got me intrigued.

I can't remember the very first, but one of my earliest "Voyager" memories is seeing the cliffhanger ending to "Unimatrix Zero: Part 1" in the morning time, with my mom. I didn't know what was going on, but I got the jist that the heroes had been turned into the evil robot-people. I don't know when that was, because I had to have been 11 or 12 when the episode first aired, but I swear I was much younger than that when I saw this...

Hmmm...you know, I never noticed that. I may need to go back and look. It is interesting, though, how some of the female leads had different styles in the pilot episodes vs. how they would appear for the bulk of the series.

  • Troi in TNG had a much different look in "Encounter at Farpoint"
  • Kira had a totally different hair style in "Emissary"
  • And although not in a "pilot"...even Uhura wore a different colored duty uniform in the first 1-2 production episodes of TOS before switching to the red.

...maybe they were still "experimenting" with Janeway's look as well? I'll check it!
Update: Have you checked it? It's an interesting thing to see.
