Makes sense. The global star power of Tom Hiddleston is not to be underestimated. I have no doubt there are people who aren't marvel fans that are watching just for Hiddleston.

Turns out everyone who speculated the Variant is Lady Loki was right. I didn't know such a character even existed in the comics prior to the speculation of who Sophia Di Martino was playing, so I just had to roll with it (although at least I had expected there would be some kind of twist considering the obvious obfuscation). However, I imagine we're all still in the dark on who exactly this Lady Loki might be (not necessarily the exact same Lady Loki of the comics) and what her intentions might be, other than some larger beef with the TVA and the Timekeepers (undoubtedly leading towards Romulan_spy's speculation from last week).

That said, we now have a clearer idea of how the Timekeepers and the TVA determine what makes the "Sacred" Timeline so sacred and all the variant timelines "worthy" of pruning: So-called variant energy. The presence of such a substance, left behind by variants like Lady Loki, is supposedly why those timelines shouldn't exist. At this point, I expect that if Romulan_spy's theory is correct about how the Timekeepers are actually the villains of the show and are using the TVA to enforce their will, then variant energy is just a bullshit excuse to prune anything that deviates from their control and isn't actually harmful (or really exist).

As for the main beats of the episode, I enjoyed watching Loki trying to scheme and wiggle his way around the TVA bureaucracy and yet kept running into brick walls. In fact, I don't think he would've ever made any headway using those methods if he hadn't directly encountered Lady Loki, which then allowed him to slip away from B-15 and Mobius. The time hopping was also a lot of fun and I particularly loved the show's (and Loki's) irrelevance towards cataclysmic events such as Pompeii.

The 'visiting just before an apocalypse because everything will be destroyed anyway' loosely reminded me of A Sound of Thunder by Ray Bradbury.

Great episode that expands the mystery now that the setup is done in the pilot episode.

Loki just can't help himself by trying to bullshit everyone, even the guys who know his entire history and expect him to act the way he is. As his first scheme inevitably fails he changes tune and gets to be more subtle and actually plays ball for once which makes for a great scene when he reveals his theory - that poor lunch salad :(

it was heavily rumored that the caped figure from the pilot was a female Loki and it was correct, which to hardcore comicbook fans was not that outlandish and for fans of original Norse mythology is even downright tame and boring ( go ahead, read up on actual Loki shenanigans from the mythology, there isn't even a movie rating appropriate to correctly depict this on screen).

I love and hate the mini cliffhangers - what is female Loki up to and why is she apparently sending out these devices to different points in time? As said before i too believe she has uncovered that the TVA/Timekeepers are the actual villains ( whereas he/she is only a villain for shits and giggles at times) and is working to bring the TVA down.

One thing - it said on Disney+ New episodes every Friday, did they change the schedule?

Or, on a smaller scale, Air Raid.

What do the reset charges achieve when detonating all across history? Aren't they just supposed to erase, uh, variant debris from the scene of the crime, without harming a blade of grass otherwise (as shown in this ep)? Why would this result in added variance?

Over 9K Asgardians died in Ragnarok. I guess not everybody made it to the ship.

(for half to just die anyway)

I was going to say that's a big drop for episode 2, but the season is only 6 episodes

Yes. it hasn't been official announced, but Loki's code name was spotted on a production weekly issue for a second season to start shooting in 2022.

Clark Gregg also said Tom told them they were shooting 10-12 episodes. But he could have been misremembering.

Other than that there was an AU female Loki in the comics, I have no real memory of her. She must have been in an era before or after I was a rabid collector. That one had black hair tho, not blonde IIRC.

It makes me wonder if timeline variants are this show's AU versions, or if the TVA just doesn't define them that way.

Either way, it's gonna be a fun, if short, ride. So far 3 "TV" series and they've hit it out of the park each time.

Great episode. I got the feeling that maybe the Timekeepers don't exist or maybe the episode is trying to lead me down that rabbit hole.

At first I was like "why?! They made Fridays great!". Then I remembered the 4 marvel movies coming out on Fridays this year...

The conversation between Mobius and Ravonna in her office felt like shades of Snowpiercer so I did think for a moment that might be case. But I think it's more likely they're the actual bad guys.

I remember early reports their is suppose to be a old Loki as well but not sure how accurate that was. I have a feeling that if we got alternate Loki we might also see alternate Owen Wilson characters as well. Maybe he is going to become a villain and doesn't know it and wants to stop female Loki before it happens. A lot of this show seems to be about free will vs destiny. That would also include the Wilson character. My theory is he might help Loki stop female Loki and the Timekeepers and his happy ending is living in the early 90s getting ride his jet skie and just relaxing.

Wow, this episode was amazing. Everything from the surreal opening scene with somewhat futuristic soldiers fighting at a Ren Faire with 1980s music playing to the final scene at a futuristic Costco during an apocalyptic hurricane with the reveal of a female Loki who has just completely screwed up the timeline was exhilarating edge of your seat stuff.

But the highlight has got to be the Pompeii scene. That was fucking hilarious!

People have been speculating that Richard E. Grant is playing an old Loki (although Grant is only 24 years older than Hiddleston).
