Happy with Star Trek we have, need more?

I'd like another episodic plus occasional mini-arcs show in the vein of TNG where we jump forward to the mid-to-late-25th century aboard a new iteration of the Enterprise (H, I or K, not J) on a mission to explore the most distant reaches of the Milky Way and its nearby satellite galaxies.

The traditional enemies are allies now or non-threats (Cardassians, Romulans, Klingons, Xindi and Ferengi routinely serve aboard ship) and there are new beligerents, competitors and potential friends on the distant frontiers of the galaxy to meet and contend with.

The ship is now capable of traversing the galaxy in a matter of months rather than decades, and can even reach some of the closer minor satellite galaxies without great difficulty. We can sometimes revisit species encountered by Voyager and see how they're doing a century later.

Both the Bajoran wormhole and the now artificially stabilized Barzan wormhole (and others discovered since) also provide shortcuts back to the Federation Alpha/Beta core worlds from the Gamma and Delta quadrants should a faster return be nescessary.

I have what I want with Discovery and Picard. I'm one of the lucky ones.

Whatever else they do is just extra, from my perspective.

However, what I would really like are less TOS prequels made 50 years after the fact, or sequels that tarnish the reputation of a beloved character just for the sake of 'what are they doing now,' and instead create something new. Like, say, exploring the completely unknown 70-year span of time between TUC and the start of TNG.

I would be interested in a new series that went back to the original dream of Roddenberry - to show that the future is a better place. It won't be utopian, but humans will be better morally and more technologically advanced. We won't lose our drive to learn, but it will grow. I really don't like the wars as much in Star Trek. They do add some depth, but I think they miss the mark sometimes on the idea of a better future.

Star Trek is also about new frontiers, and a humanity willing to cooperate together despite differences and stronger because of those differences. Not a more evolved humanity.

The fact that it's a prequel isn't the inherent problem. It's that they're trying to shove in a bunch of stuff only a few years before TOS. Had they developed a show that took place, say, in 2310, then there's a 50 year span of time before TNG even starts. Plenty of time to create a new universe that isn't going to significantly alter what we know.

Look, I keep a document that has prospective ideas for spinoffs on my laptop, and I’ve got like fifteen Trek related ones that stretch across the timeline. So hell yeah I want more. Paramount, hire me!

I grew up on 24th century Trek, and taking all this focus on the era around Kirk is understandable, that’s where the franchise originated, but I could easily do with more Trek centered in the later timeframes, where there’s more elements left in flux - Discovery might make a few things set in stone, but the centuries gap between Picard and “That Hope Is You” is wide enough to give a lot of room all the same.

I liked the 23rd Century, always did, but two years of fighting with gatekeepers, old-schoolers (of which I no longer consider myself one of), and Anti-DSC Fans during the first two seasons cured me of that. When Discovery left the 23rd Century so, in a way, did I.

Between DSC leaving that time-frame, and PIC fixing what I didn't like about the 24th Century before, I don't have any reasons left to say, "I'm okay with it if Star Trek just stays in the 23rd Century!" I now think it's a dead argument based on moot points.

I'm happy with Picard and Lower Decks and am very anxiously awaiting Strange New Worlds. Discovery is an entirely different story.

The "original dream of Roddenberry" did not have "morally better" humans. Early TOS established humans were conquerors. It's right there in The Conscience of the King.

I wanted another Kelvin universe movie. I'm not happy with just three. But I know that's not gonna happen.

I enjoy today's Trek more than the 90's output. But P+'s Trekspam can't last forever, it's eventually going to become content first and foremost for the sake of contractual obligation like a lot of those awful Marvel series'. We'll see what happens. Right now I like the Discovery crew, I'm enjoying Old Picard more than in-his-prime Picard and Lower Decks is amusing.

The one addition I'd like to what is already in the hopper is a straight-up anthology show.

The idea is basically to do a series of one-offs which focus on characters already established. This would allow a "coda" of sorts for a lot of the Berman Trek era casts, though it could also utilize new cast in "prequel" stories. It could in a way act as a backdoor for pilots of other series, if there was a great critical/fan response to some of the episodes. Presumably they'd have to be really "actor focused" outings to help cut down on the costs related to sets and VFX.

I've always wanted an anthology series, to give more time to underserved characters and show unseen aspects of Federation life, etc. We could find out what Saavik is up to in the 24th century. Have Ro Laren visit Bajor after the events of DS9. See life on a civilian starship. The problem is, on TV, it'd be pretty expensive, unless it limited the concept to a certain Trek era and limited the costumes, sets, etc, that were needed, which would take a lot of the fun out of it.

When Fuller was running Discovery there were rumors that it was going to be a quasi-anthology, with a different ship, crew, and time frame for every season. I thought that sounded like a great way to go.

There's no reason an anthology needs to be super-expensive. Particularly if you are doing shorts you could have an entire episode take place on a shuttlecraft, or during an away mission with location filming in the forest. There are lots of available options which could keep budgets relatively low.

That wasn't a rumor. Fuller actually pitched an anthology Trek series to CBS, who rejected. He just went ahead and used his planned first season of the anthology series as Disco's first season anyway. IIRC, what is a rumor is that the anthology series planned second season ended becoming Picard season 1.
