I just had to put this out there. With summer coming anyone know of anyone or had it happen to you? While wearing a mask did you get a tan or sunburn around the mask? I mean it has to happen to someone right? I keep thinking it will be me.

I tan easily but not darkly. So far there are no mask stencils visible

 

This will be the second summer, so maybe someone ran into this issue last year and posted something about it.

Hello! This is my first post on Trek BBS. I'm basically an old-school Trekkie, 1970s-style... watched the TOS reruns, and had a lot of Trek materials like the Concordance (with the wheel), Technical Manual, Enterprise blueprints, The Making of Star Trek, Starlog #1, AMT kits, etc. I don't have any of those anymore, because I lost pretty much all my possessions from my youth (for various reasons). On the other hand, I still have my memories, so I'm still pretty good with Trek trivia (both in-universe and behind-the-scenes).

Actually, the extent to which I've watched the various series is proportional to how long ago they were produced (ranging from 100% of TOS to 0% of the current series).

In short... a TOS nut!

You had Starlog #1? I still have most of mine from the earlier years. I started with #3, but eventually acquired #2. Apparently they're all online somewhere now, but I'm still partial to my original print magazines.

 

Yes, I vaguely recall having #1 (featuring Star Trek) and #2 (featuring Space: 1999). I didn't buy them as a habit (mainly just a Trek fan, not so much sci-fi in general). I probably had more copies of Mad Magazine than any other (probably including one with a Trek spoof).

So many things that'd be cool to have from that period... never thought about it at the time!

 

What a lot of people who grew up in the internet era don't understand is that Starlog was often the only source of news some people had about new TV shows and movies. People in large cities with easy access to conventions had more access to information, but those of us in other countries or in smaller areas relied on the magazines for information.

 

Hi I'm new and totally not a malicious AI or ADHD-spambot. If I was I certainly wouldn't hang out on old-school BBS/Forums!

Recently as part of my treatment for various mental things going on in my life... I eliminated my social media accounts. That lead me to seek out old-style BBS/Forum groups for what's left of my hobby-life, including Star Trek.

Glad to see such a thriving and dynamic community. Last Trek I watched was Lower Decks, yesterday. Caught up on Season Two.

Looking forward to finding a few hours to catch up on all that's going on in the Trek community and jumping into the discussion.

 

welcome to the bbs --- how were you able to just give up social media? omg anyway good luck with that we have a thread on this part of the bbs for mental health --- looking I see you found that great...--- we tend or really organize everything on the forum --- it is neat --- I didn't know that the lower decks was in season 2 till last week ... I am catching up now. 0--0 you have reminded me to watch the next one -

1) Sent out a message that I was closing my social media accounts to everyone -- please contact me via email or if you have my phone number keep in touch by text.

2) One week later I deleted everything.

Been the best two months of my life between panic attacks and other nonsense -- working on that. But the pressure to be "always on" or have something to say to keep followers happy is gone, and that's a huge load off.

As for keeping track of friends and family -- if you are friends worth keeping or real legit family, you know how to contact me outside of "teh computahs." We kept in contact from the 1970s when I was born up until someone said "And Now: Facebook" through various means. That's just what society did. And a great many people live without social media every day and are quite successful/thriving at life.

So for me it was just a matter of flipping a switch. I read a newspaper in the morning, catch the evening local news, read a few headlines on my feed, and that's the extent of my interaction with the world.

And for the first time since I created my first social media profiles I am HAPPY. The noise has stopped.

 

@HappyMcWonderful - this way you have gone to get out of social media sounds interesting ... but for me it is all interrelated,.. there is fb connection on lots of places on the net that I use... so mmmm I use fb to log into the trekbbs forum...because sometimes my saved passwords don't work.. but yeah there are social groups that I am in on fb that are important to me and not really anyone in the group ever calls me but we all talk about our posts... so yeah (I also keep my head in the sand and try not to expose myself to current events -- specially the bad stuff -- it is not fun) but also I don't listen to like pop music as well as I make music where usually the last thing I have heard or what every I have heard at some point works its way into my music -- my music group I'm in we post our improv's and then mix them together for new songs as well.

 

Honestly you'd be surprised by how little online interaction you need. When I talked it over with the therapists I came to the conclusion that I didn't need any of this stuff in the 1970s, 80s, 90s or early 2000s. At all.

I've always maintained passwords for individual systems, such as TrekBBS or HomeshopMachinist or The Whiteboard. Even at the height of my social media fuckery -- I mean presence - each system had it's own unique password. I never logged on with Google or Facebook for anything.

To me that's an unacceptable breach of privacy and security as well as an inappropriate level of trust in flawed unstable systems driven by profit. All it takes is for a massive downtime incident to prove my point.

 

what you say is true --- I am old and remember the 90's back when the net went commercial OMG it was so horrible ... we used the networks for doing engineering things and programming and talking about how to do them... not selling .. it was a really bad move back then when the net went capitalistic so horrible and all the net traffic became commercial ... (I did get used to it but still don't like it.)

I feel like that some days. Turning it all off and walking away from the real-time in-your-face constant bombardment of PAY ATTENTION 2 MEEEE crap has had a positive effect on my mental health. There is still the underlying PTSD and anxiety/panic-attack stuff I am sorting through, but without social media trying to sell me shit in real time while telling me to feel TERRIBLE because I am a White American with Privilege (WAP) and cutting me down to size for not being on the right side of the line... it's getting better.

Honestly have no idea why people choose to bathe in that, but whatever. To each their own.
