I think I just missed the 25th Anniversary but I became a fan a year or so before the 30th Anniversary in 1996. I remember it very well!

My involvement in the 25th was limited to just what was on TV and film (oh and I started buying up the movies on VHS, which had been generically repackaged). Mostly The Undiscovered Country and Generations stand out as the one-two punch that started Berman Trek fatigue to set in for me. And I suppose Caretaker as well (one-three punch?)

TUC because it was jarringly different in style from even the prior Harve Bennett movies... to the point that TNG-S5/6/7 felt VERY familiar after that. And then Generations because it seemed larger, but also a LOT smaller and criminally familiar (the DesMcCarthy score definitely didn't do it any favors).

DS9-S1 I mostly missed, which was probably a good thing. The Las Vegas broadcast of Emissary was ruined in its second hour by poor stereo mixing (dialogue dropout), and then none of us in school could seem to find the show in San Luis Obispo area (NBC affiliate didn't have it; you'd get the "clean" promos inside TNG-S6 and those promos were laughing at us). What we did catch, they were obviously experimenting, but everyone I knew quickly wrote it off.

DS9-S2 did some amazing stuff; to me it brought back the excitement that had been missing since TNG-S5. But it's NOT my impression that DS9-3 benefited at all from its "solo" half-season like it was supposed to, and then Past Tense was frankly terrible. And VOY was disappointing from the start, if I was honest with myself (and I sometimes wasn't). UPN was also was not always easy to find in Springfield MA area (you don't even WANT to get me started on trying to find S-3 Babylon 5 after it got really good). Mostly I remember my fellow campus-mates insisting they loved bland VOY just to prove how much DS9 allegedly sucked.

DS9 was really the only thing Trek had going for me after that. And it strikes me that at almost every point that I've been following Trek, my reaction to it has seemed almost opposite that of everyone around me.

It's always so interesting to me on a psychological level how people respond to Star Trek. I had grown up watching TOS reruns largely due to my dad. I had the TOS Concordance and Mego figures to play out my own adventures. Star Trek, for me, was this larger, almost sandbox type environment. Then TMP and TNG came along and introduced some new and rather strange facets (transporter completely killing someone, temporal anomalies were someone has to kill themselves/temporal duplicate) and it was less fun. But my friends insisted this was better than TOS, and so was VOY and DS9. And I never saw the appeal of those shows. DS9 I warmed up to later and TNG is hit and miss but the rest...I'm TOS all the way no matter what my friends thought. I liked TUC, I really enjoyed TVH and was fully on board with ST 09.

At every turn I feel like I'm outside the norm of Trek opinions. So, if nothing else, I find the opposite of everyone feeling quite relatable.

I remember in college it was popular for Trekkies to largely dismiss TOS, laugh at how non-progressive or "un-PC" it was, and mostly dismiss that it had very many stories of value. The movies were acknowledged as OK (as long as you never missed an opportunity to bash STV), but mostly Berman Trek was the thing that was happening. It was kind of frustrating.

Fox61 (Springfield) would play DS9 right before TNG, and the auditorium would fill up with noisy people showing up for the latter with little regard that you were engrossed in the final minutes of the former. And then the TNG-S7 fix often felt anticlimactic right on the tails of your DS9-S2 fix.

I mostly came into Trek through TNG. Saw The Voyage Home and started watching TOS re-runs in time to catch the TNG promotion (TNG title card used to EXPLODE into the screen in hyperspace at the end of those earliest promos), but I still didn't know most of the TOS characters. And they let TNG run solo for most of its first year before bringing TOS back into circulation.

So I soon "got" why TNG "sucked" next to the dynamic storytelling of TOS, but then I missed a lot of TNG-S3 in boarding school and meanwhile it had gotten REALLY good. And we made it a point to start taping the eps after Picard got Borged... although you still heard from most people not in the know (based on however far back they had tried watching it) that it "sucked."

Sounds like my experience during the first several years I was a fan.

Then it was the "Killer B's have destroyed Star Trek! Voyager sucks! Cancel Enterprise!" for a while. Then, after Nemesis, it was TNG and the TNG Era as a whole that was bashed. And TOS kind-of/sort-of made a comeback for a while.

Nowadays, among the Elitist Trekkie Crowd, it's more like anything goes... as long as it came out before 2009.

Looking back at 30 years of my being a fan, I see a pattern and a clear through-line: something is bashed because it's fashionable to be bashed, and then suddenly it becomes "great" or at least "okay".

So I have to look at the context of the posts to see if someone really has a point to their criticizing DSC or PIC (or the Kelvin Films while we're at it) or if they're just going with what everyone else says and will change their opinion once again, when the wind starts to blow in another direction. I'm not saying there aren't things to criticize about newer Star Trek, I just have to look at what's the motivation and thought process behind those criticisms and if it's even actual criticism or just parroting someone else's rhetoric.

I snagged tickets to the red carpet at Paramount Studios for that 30th Anniversary Special. Quite a fun time. Grace Lee Whitney arrived first in a red skirt outfit (not a costume), giving everyone the LL&P sign. Most of the casts of the productions at that time showed up, with Patrick Stewart being the noticeable absence. He was working on a project in London and sent a video greeting.

They could do Prime movies with Kelvin cast set in the “Lost Era” between TMP and TWOK. Kirk would be in his early forties and Pine is currently pushing forty so that’s not a stretch. And from the Canon angle it’s unexplored. Perhaps even use the Beyond uniforms with a hint of TMP or TWOK.
For folks who don’t care about such things they would work as sequels to the Kelvin films as well.

I can say as a Trekkie that got hooked on a Friday night because 20/20 wasn't on (I was a weird ten-year-old girl!), I got into TNG in the middle of things. I then got to know Star Trek as a whole, and watched everything I could. Deep Space Nine made much more sense, post-9/11, when I fully revisited the series, particularly the war arcs. I never could get my family into it at that point, though my parents did let me drag them to the first three TNG movies.
It wasn't until the Kelvinverse that my brother and sister-in-law took a step into my world. I didn't get to see 2009 in the theaters, but I saw ID twice in the theaters and Beyond three times in the theaters. I, for one, am glad if the Kelvinverse continues.

So, if the next movie is Prime timeline and Kelvin cast where would we comment, in the Prime Movies forum or the Kelvin movies forum? Would there have to be a third forum? ;)

    I approve.

If I were making a Star Trek, even a whole series, I wouldn't even tell you what continuity it was attached to. It's Star Trek, that's what it is. And I like the idea that Kelvin cast could do what appear to be prime movies (People said Tarantino should be disqualified for not understanding/respecting "the timelines"; but I flatly disagree).

Everything doesn't need to be clearly labeled and in perfect continuity, bow wrapped around it. If it were we would not have the Harve Bennett movies.
I might have been one of Berman Trek's bashers. I was frequently accused of it after 2009 came out, however I also received a lot of gaslighting at that time to the effect that the "B&B" backlash never happened, and that I was supposedly alone in my distaste for the overall stylistic sameness of Berman Trek. I know when the backlash happened I thought a lot of it was mean-spirited (half the complaints were with Trek installments Braga had nothing to do with, such as Insurrection/Nemesis), but I shared the exasperation.

Kelvin Trek I've largely defended. I don't thing they're good movies, however the first one for me is great. And on the average I consider them better than the TNG films, which are also mostly not good.

STD, I actually love (on average) the first ten episodes. I picked up the 1st season in Best Buy steelbook. End of the second Mirror ep in STD-1 is where it becomes the show that broke itself. And I've been just unable to understand Kurtzman Trek's story problems ever since. STD-2 (especially the finale) was the worst offender for me. They needed to hit home runs after that, and even on STP that still hasn't happened.

I take no pleasure in seeing them not succeed, but I can't keep waiting for it to improve. And I have to care about ST's future prospects beyond Kurtzman's or even Abrams' involvement.

I've much preferred the wildly varied DC multiverse to the homogeneous MCU. But obviously the MCU is the biggest cash cow out there so that's what they're doing.

I'm surprised they haven't announced their version of the Defenders miniseries, yet. They've set up a century of Temporal Wars in Discovery S3. It's only a matter of time before Michael Burnham is shoulder to shoulder with Jean-Luc Picard saving the universe from non-existence.

i guess kelvin as the 3 kelvin movies still dealt with Prime stuff. however if its a full on Prime film with no kelvin stuff it will either have to go in the I-X section and that section will have to be renamed 'Prime universe' or thered have to be a new movie section like 'Movies XIV+'

id hazard a guess at that being along the lines of the new movie (with added Kelvin/Pine)

Didn't Kurtzman say that each show was it's own thing? Although, Disco 3 featured Picard-era unfiorms and members of the Qowat Milat.

Stramge New Worlds looks like it's going to be TOS for the 2020s (from what we know so far, just several years earlier with a different crew) and Section 31 will also spin out of Discovery. They'#rte startign to rebuild the universe.

I'd love a mega crossover. Only the books and comics have really done them for Trek - on screen they only managed up to three guest characters in any one episode or film (unless you count Trials and Tribble-ations, but that was all archive footage) Plus they could bring back characters CBS hasn't used yet

If it's not the movie then the 60th Anniversary in 2026 (though that's bloomin ages away!!)

I'll believe it a little sooner, when the first filming pics leak.

    But not before then.
