Star Wars Canon

So I have been reading though some threads and there is mention of Canon.

Can someone explain how Canon is decided? Is it by the fans, or is it set by Lucas himself or maybe Lucas Arts?

If I go to the used book store near my home, how do I know if the SW novels I am buying are Canon or not?

Thanks in advance.

Basically, it's policy by the IP holder. Current policy is that all new output (novels, comics and games since mid 2014) and the movies and shows are canon. Older, now non-canon novels usually carry the "Legends" label on the cover, so those aren't canon.

IMO that's something of a marketing strategy; if a novel covers something that a show or movie wants to cover later, it will contradict it, even if both are called canon by the IP holders, as happened recently with the depiction of the Battle of Mandalore in the novel Ahsoka and season 7 of The Clone Wars.

There's also this list of canon books on the Star Wars Wiki. You can also toggle books intended for age groups that you aren't interested in.

Fuck Disney ect.

Decide your own canon. No one is stopping you.

Here's a thing people often get wrong. The old novels, comics etc. that are now under the 'Legends' banner were never actually "canon" at all. When George Lucas still owned the company, the only "canon" was the stories he was involved with, which is basically just the (only, at the time) two movie trilogies and The Clone Wars (the CG one, not the Genndy Tartakovsky one that came before.)
Literally everything else was apocryphal, and every author, artist and game developer that created the material knew that going in, and have said so repeatedly. They weren't adding to the canon, they were supplementing it. They were playing with George's toys, but they were still George's toys at the end of the day. Sometimes a piece of art or design from the EU would strike a chord with George and he may pluck it out and incorporate it in some way, but it would typically be it's own thing within canon.

The idea that the EU/Legends works were somehow one coherent "canon" that's been supressed is both asinine and divorced from reality. It was a hodgepodge of a thousand different stories that was riddled with inconsistencies, contradictions and retcons on top of retcons on top of retcons on top of retcons on top of retcons.

So yeah, when Disney took over they wanted some kind of order and coherence to the media they intended to sell, so rather than continue an old product line that was not so much on it's last legs as it's last worn down stumps, they opted to clear the decks and at least try to keep anything new going forward all part of the same canon as the six movies and one TV show that had already laid the foundation. Of course with the realities of producing all of this, there's already been a handful of contradictions, but nothing major, and the depth and meaningfulness of the cross-pollination between media has been unprecedented.

So who decides what's canon? The owners of the intellectual property, because that's literally what that means.

These days it's decided by the Story Group. But even then, the TV shows and movies still have the right to disregard anything in the tie-in material, as we've seen most recently with The Bad Batch.

If it's published before August 2014, it is most certainly not canon. Anything published since then is the nebulous "technically sort of canon until the TV shows or movies say otherwise" that I just mentioned. Which should mean it's non canon, but Disney apparently needs to have its cake and eat it too.

I’ve been working my way through all of the EU comics through the Legends Epic Collection. For me, there has been a lot and I mean A LOT of trash. Legacy, Knights of the Old Republic, the main title where Luke is an angsty little shit over Leia at every turn and the Princess is suddenly a combat/recon pilot? And how many Boba Fett stories do we REALLY need? There are a few good stories. The stuff after Order 66 and the fall of the Republic are pretty good. But most of it I’ve found my eyes rolling far more often than being engaged.

Lot of trash in Disney Canon aswell.

Worse some of its recycled trash taken from legends ie reborn emperor.

Reborn Emperor was terrible in either continuity. You'll get no argument from me on that point. With every series, you'll have your share of hits and misses. I generally like what they have done with the Disney Star Wars canon, but I will never say its perfect. There are many imperfect entries. However, my point is that the EU, in some circles, is quite revered. I gave up on the EU books in the midst of New Jedi Order and the comics around the same time. After reading these 30+ volumes of comics, I just don't see that I missed that much.

Lucas is no longer at LucasFilm, he hasn't since like 2014. LucasArts was the name of the game publisher/developer (now called LucasFilm Games again), LucasFilm is the film company.

Canon his maintained by the LucasFilm storygroup.

Basically everything released after 2014 is canon (plus the movies and clone wars 3d series), but there are some exceptions.

Now some of the things on that list may not be canon, it's not like the Storygroup gives a list, so Wookieepedia includes most things until otherwise stated.

Any that ends with Fett falling into the Sarlacc pit and staying there. Unfortunately....
So, the OT? That's my preference though the Mandalorian almost made it worth it...almost.

This is similar to my story. The Thrawn Trilogy and the New Jedi Academy was iffy at best for me. But, my larger experience was it was very hit and miss so I didn't put a lot of stock in to the stories told. Once I read that Lucas' didn't regard them as "canon" or whatever then I didn't either. They were fun stories, but ultimately not impacting what I really enjoyed. And that's when I decided that canon really doesn't matter as much as fandom insists it is.

What matters is an interesting story with enjoyable characters. Which has always been a mixed bag in Star Wars.

They are a multibillion dollar corporation.

A corporation that happy films next to Chinese concentration camps.

I think they will live despite my insults.
Honestly, at this point I don't really even get that worked up about corporations like Disney doing this kind of shit anymore. Literally every big corporation does shit like this, and if I got worked up every time something like this came u, I'd never be able to enjoy anything.
Yeah, it's a good idea to be aware of what they're doing, and to call them out out on it when they do, but I'

Overall, I think I've actually been enjoying the post Disney stuff more than I did the Legends stuff. I enjoyed most of the Legends stuff I read, but I've been enjoying the Disney stuff more.

And?

I meant it's rude towards those who like the new canon.

People can like what they like.
If you like TLJ and ROS fine.

I am not however obliged to like it speak or it in nice terms.

Plus so what if I think the shitquel trilogy is a flaming dumpster pile of fermented shit.
It's just my opinion which matters f all.
