Wow, that was an gorgeous trailer, and as someone who only knows the basic of the Eternals, I am very intrigued.
Which comic runs are worth checking out? I'm assuming the Jack Kirby and Neil Gaiman runs should at least be worth checking out.
I've got to be honest here. I have absolutely no idea. As much as a Marvel nerd as I am, the Eternals is probably the biggest gap in my knowledge. Most of my knowledge of the Eternals comes from a single arc of Roger Stern's Avengers, issues 247-249.
That said, it's hard to go wrong with Jack Kirby or Neil Gaiman.
In the end, my lack of knowledge of the source material has actually made me more excited to see the movie. It will be the first MCU project that I will go into without a bucket full of preconceived notions about the source material. It will make for a unique experience.
The Gaiman run is excellent. Maybe I'm biased since I love all things Gaiman but it's worth at least checking out.
I haven't read anything else with the Eternals so no comment beyond that, but I'm also similarly intrigued by this film because of that lack of knowledge beyond the basics.

Yeah, I'm totally unfamiliar with the Eternals. But they had me at "Gemma Chan."
The Kieron Gillen/Esad Ribic run only recently started, but it's been off to an incredibly strong start. Probably one of my favorite superhero comics of the moment.
And it has the most simple, elegant solution to the Nick Fury Problem, a.k.a. what to do when the soon-to-be-much-more-well-known movie version is a different race/gender than your comic version?

As someone who already checked out some of the Eternals comics out of curiosity: the Gaiman run was a massive disappointment relative to most of his stuff and did absolutely nothing to get me interested or excited in the Eternals. The current run seems way more interesting so far.
I‘ve read most of the Eternal stuff (minus the 80s series) up to Marvel NOW, and a lot of it is pretty forgettable. I still rate the original Kirby run highest, for its feeling of otherworldliness. The Gaiman run, to me, felt very mediocre and overhyped, but I did enjoy the Knauf run that followed it. As for Roger Stern‘s Avengers, it‘s probably a goos introduction to the Eternals, but I absolutely love his Avengers, so I‘m somewhat biased in that regard.
Also, I find it a bit weird that Kro will be the main villain. At least the way I remember it (and it‘s been a while) he worked with Thena on a number of occasions and generally didn‘t strike me as a „Marvel villain“ as seen in the movies. I‘d imagine the big frog guy would be the main villain.

I just realized that Kirby created The Eternals after the New Gods.
I saw it suggested yesterday that it was his attempt to recapture that past glory when he was back at Marvel. Which is ironic, because I've been led to understand that the New Gods were sort of a loose conceptual "sequel" to his work on Thor -- that they were implicitly the next generation of gods after the Asgardian gods were wiped out in Ragnarok.
I've (perhaps controversially) never Kirby's stuff, but the Eternals I've read from the last decade(ish) have been O.K.
I'm sort of lookng forward to the movie, out of curiosity at least. Not least of which is the threat big enough to get the people that sat out Thanos destroying half of all life to go "Hmm, we better step up here !" .

It might be that Thanos is what changes. Or Thanos/The Avengers toying with infinity stones.
Or it might be one of their own going public in a bad way...

I will spoiler this for speculation, but its based on the trailer (and I have almost zero Eternals knowledge from their comics run so I'm not coming from a position of comic spoiler either)
We see like 10 Eternals together 'in the past' and it would appear Selma Hayek in their 'leader' and then in that "I could lead the Avengers" meal scene I think there's only like 6 or 7 and Angelina Jolie would seem to be at the 'head of the table'. So I'm guessing some die or go away at some point.
That was my thought as well and maybe that ties in with why Druig chooses to do what we suspect he might do now.
I had never really looked up the dates before. I was born in 1970 so my first introduction to Darkseid was The Great Darkness Saga. When I read the Eternals years later in reprints, I had always thought the New Gods were Kirby trying to redo the Eternals or improve upon them. I mean the similarities are pretty striking. Now, I randomly look up the dates on Wikipedia and discover my assumptions have been wrong for thirty years.
Same here! I can't tell you the number of times I've watched that trailer already!
