What happened to the Short Treks?

Considering that Cardassia Prime is a smoking pile of rubble and most of the Cardassian people were killed by the Dominion in retribution, I don’t think there’s a whole lot of politicking going on.
According to Lower Decks, there was some sort of big conference going on on Cardassia Prime only five years after the end of the Dominion War which the Cerritos was supposed to attend until the orders got changed at the last minute.

Yes, because it was considered that Cardassia wasn't right for that kind of conference.

To my mind, she knows of him. My personal view of Spock's early life is: Sybok leaves Vulcan>>his pet dies in yesteryear>>Michael Burnham arrives. Having lost his half brother and sehlat right before she gets there adds context for me to his initial cold reception when she arrives and deepens the trauma of their Lassie/Harry and the Hendersons moment later on.

Maybe. The timeline is pretty tight. Burnham (b. 2226) was already ten years old when she was living on Vulcan, whereas Spock's pet sehlat's death (and the events of Yesteryear) take place when he was seven (Spock b. 2230).

Spock may have been born in January, and Burnham in December, and their 7th and 10th year, respectively, nearly match.

I wonder what happened to Thelin the Andorian who was Spock's replacement in the other timeline.

A half-baked idea about old Uhura and the Borg (which had zero chance of happening BTW, what with Nichols’s physical and mental state at the time) is quite different from what we actually got. It was literally a first-draft-caliber idea that was immediately changed to something more focused on the show they decided to produce.

Sure, but the point in bringing that first-draft idea up was to demonstrate that the premise behind Short Treks was flexible and designed to allow for a wide variety of characters to appear (including old classics), in contradiction to your claim that having such characters appear "wasn’t really the point of the Short Treks."

Fine. If it makes you feel better, I’ll amend my statement. The Short Treks as presented are not intended to show ‘where are they now’ segments for 20-something-year-old characters that the present producers don’t care about.

I think TOS centric Short Treks like the Uhura one are likely, if Short Treks ever come about in the future, because they would be a fanciful bridge between Strange New Worlds and Picard.

Nichols is not in a good position, but Takei or Koenig could fill a similar spot, especially if young Sulu or Chekov are ever planned for SNW.

But, yeah, we've had 10 Short Treks, and they all fall in the same basic categories:
- Discovery stand-ins: Runaway
- Experimental Ideas: Calypso, Ephraim & Dot
- Prequel tie-in: The Brightest Star, The Girl Who Made the Stars, Children of Mars
- Fun, independent stories: The Escape Artist, The Trouble with Edward
- SNW Pilots: Q&A, Ask Not

The main thing they all have in common is their existence as a tie-in to a current show. A cameo from a TOS figure or Berman era character would likely have to tie in to SNW or STPicard in some way.

I think, at least in terms of STPicard, a fun cameo is more likely for Short Treks than the show itself.

If they're gonna do a TOS-themed Short Treks, get Walter Koenig and let him off Chekov for canon realsies this time. After the "To Serve All My Days" and "Reqiuem" fan films, and his 90's movie pitch where everyone but Spock and McCoy died, I think it's what he wants.

Outside of Calypso and the Mudd one, I haven’t really liked any of the Short Treks so I would hope if they were ever to bring it back, it would be to fill us in on what’s going on with old characters that we aren’t likely to see in the other shows.

There’s also the upcoming Prodigy show, and the planned Section 31 show, so I’d imagine that those will get Short Treks at some point.

I imagine that seeing Rios, Raffi, Jurati or Elnor interact with one of the Berman legacy characters would go over well with the core fans.

Not specifically, but the premise of Short Treks can certainly encompass "where are they now?" segments for 20-something-year-old characters. :)

Well, when they actually do that, I’ll amend my statement.

Yes, these two and the Tribble one.;)
