It could be that Sokovia encompassed a territory that was historically known as Latveria, which reasserted itself as an independent nation under Doom's rule.

Dr. Doom- I must thank the Avengers! They were able to eradicate the stench of Sokovia so that a new power could rise. From this rubble Latavaria will rise!

Kevin Feige has said that he regrets whitewashing the Ancient One in Doctor Strange.

I mean there was no easy solution to that

That character was going to cause a problem no matter what they did. It can't be Tibetan due to China's ban on them. You can't be Chinese because well China. There is bad blood all over that region of the world.

From Feige's comments, it was more about trying to avoid the racial stereotype of the wise Asian mystic imparting his secrets to a white-savior figure -- although they just replaced that racially problematical trope with the equally problematical trope of whitewashing.

It seems to me the best solution there would've been to make Stephen Strange Asian-American -- cast someone like Daniel Dae Kim or John Cho in the role. Then he wouldn't have been a white savior appropriating Asian culture, but an Asian-American rediscovering his own heritage (like Nicky Shen in the new CW Kung Fu series). Although I guess portraying an Asian hero as mystically empowered is as much a stereotype in its way as portraying one as a martial artist. And there's nothing really all that Asian about Doctor Strange's style of magic, although I guess the mandala-like circles of light in the movie would qualify.

Well, golly, we wouldn't want to have a magic user character complicating our fantasy movie about magicians, would we?

You're right; casting an Asian American as Strange would have been a good compromise. Not every casting decision has to be analyzed five times over... sometimes twice is enough.

The attitude "don't overanalyze" is what led to the mistake Feige is now apologizing for. When it's something with this much baggage attached, it certainly should be considered carefully. For that matter, any decision about anything should be made after consideration of all the relevant angles. Being thoughtful is not a sin.

It's not like the only two choices are Asian or white.

I can't understand all the regret coming out of Marvel Films on this one. It was pretty brave to change the typical elderly asian male master into an androgynous Celtic played by a woman. AND, she's one of the most interesting characters in the film.

But it still gave a job to a white actor that could have gone to an Asian actor. This is about job opportunities for real people and the systemic biases that still heavily exclude Asian actors from gainful employment. However benevolent the goal, a decision that shuts a person of color out of a paying job is problematical in effect.

In short, avoiding a racial stereotype by turning an Asian character white is just trading one form of discrimination for another. It's dodging the issue rather than solving it. Feige is saying he's realized there were other options he failed to consider.

We can't cast the role as Asian because that'd be a stereotype.
We can't cast someone else in the role because that'd be whitewashing.

Did you read Feige's comments? “We thought we were being so smart, and so cutting-edge... We’re not going to do the cliché of the wizened, old, wise Asian man. But it was a wake-up call to say, ‘Well, wait a minute, is there any other way to figure it out? Is there any other way to both not fall into the cliché and cast an Asian actor?’ And the answer to that, of course, is yes.” (Emphasis added.)

The mistake they made was assuming those were the only two options. These complex problems can't be solved if we want to dumb things down and find simple answers. I'm heartened that Feige realizes that.

Eh, regardless of who they cast as the Ancient One, no one else would have been a better Dr. Strange then Cumberbatch, and he was the most important casting decision from that movie, so I think they did pretty well.
