How was 7 of 9 introduced in 'Picard'?

I like Star Trek. Should I watch The Next Generation?

No. It's not real Star Trek. I mean the captain is French and the second in command is a white North American man. Clearly they're trying to appeal to the SJW crowd. And don't get me started on the ship designs and uniforms. I mean what's wrong with brightly colored plywood sets. Pretty sure its going to get cancelled, and that one producer, I think his name is Rick Berman, pretty sure he's gonna be fired any day now.

Also, I just want to understand your point of view on Picard. Lots of characters from TOS have died. How does that impact enjoyability? Honest question-no sarcasm (yet. )

If a character dies during the series, then that's how it is. The problem comes when we have loved certain characters and episodes for decades and suddenly a new series comes around and starts "changing" history. No way to know how these new events may affect the classic episodes. For example when watching some old good epieode I don't need an image in my mind that this character was killed 25 years after this episode aired. And for what, shock value?

I truly believe that if you love something that much it will not change. As I said, I love TOS and am a TOS fan through and through. TNG didn't take away from it, DS9 didn't take away from it, Generations didn't take away from it. It's in my mind, forever and always the meaning is the same.

For what it's worth, I apologize if you felt bullied. It is too easy to forget sometimes that there are real people behind the anonymous usernames and the spirited debates about Klingons and "canon" and such.

For what it's worth, I was pretty much having this exact same debate, on another board with different people, about the new BATMAN cartoon series that just got announced today. Which I mention only to stress that I wasn't targeting you personally. Trust me, I get into the same argument with other folks, about other franchises.

Honestly, I think there was a wide range of responses. That was a long time ago, but most of the Trekkies I knew thought it was hilarious -- and I remember being surprised that some fans actually took offense. I mean, I like to think that we're all capable of laughing at ourselves -- and at our own occasional foibles and excesses.

Heck, I'm old enough to remember SNL's very first Trek sketch, when Elliot Gould (I think) played the network exec arriving to cancel the show, and Captain Kirk was played by John Belushi . . . .

But again, as others have said, do you feel Journey to Babel, or any of the TOS movies to feature Sarek are ruined after Sarek died in Unification? Or is TOS ruined now you know Spock Prime died in Star Trek Beyond?

For that matter, do the real life deaths of Leonard Nimoy, DeForrest Kelley, James Doohan or Mark Lenard impact your ability to enjoy TOS and its movies, or the TNG episodes they appeared in?

You don’t need to like every series/movie to be a Star Trek fan. You can only be a fan of TNG and be a Star Trek fan. A fan is someone who enjoys part of a franchise.

Confession: I'm not sure I have watched Star Trek Beyond.... (yet?) If I have I don't remember much if anything about it.

Actually good that you brought this up. Sometimes I find it.... awkward or scary in lack of a better word when someone who has passed appears on screen.
But I like to think that when that episode or film was filmed that actor was very much alive and might like the fact that their work is being enjoyed after they have left us. Everything ends sometimes, as far as I know eventually the entire universe will be a massive black hole or disappear in some other way, we are all here temporarily.

If you enjoy part of Star Trek you’re a Star Trek fan.

In my case I think 'Generations' is such an awful movie I stay away from it, I haven't watched it in over ten years and there are no plans to change that.

Perhaps I'm scared for nothing. The time may come when I visit the 'Picard' series, however that might happen only after the final episode, I want to know what I'm getting myself into.

I mean, you're getting yourself in to a TV show. One that can be left behind if uninteresting. Like me. Season 2 has Q so I'll be leaving that behind, likely as not.
