TOS questions...

I like the theory where Number One's real name is Leigh Chapel, Older sister of Christine Chapel.

I kind of liked that theory when I first read it in the old Officer's Manual; but after a while I realized that it made the Star Trek universe in general - and Starfleet in paticular seem so small.

You can see the reflection of the blank screen! Ouch! Please, please tell me they fixed that for the remastered episode.

Well, I fixed it in my remastered version...

Nice to know they predicted the popularity of widescreen television sets back in the 60s. Add that to the list of evidence showcasing the hindsight ingenuity of TOS.

Sorry to report AC64, but that cap is from the Remastered ep :(

Am I the only one who thinks this is a silly backstory for her?

We don't know for sure that
was Robin Lefler's mother. Peter David has had fun teasing everyone with clues - she also worked with Spock, closely resembles Christine Chapel and Lwaxana Troi and sounds a little like the ship's computer voice. But essentially Robin's immortal mother, Morgan Primus (Primus = One) may have been Morgan LeFay of Arthurian legend.

That was never quite clear. The initial writer's bible didn't say she was an alien, IIRC. Dorothy Fontana's "Vulcan's Glory" though suggests that she's from a race called Ilyrians.

Majel's own take on it (when prepping for "The Cage") was that Number One came from an early Earth colony; names had fallen into disuse, perhaps due to genetic tampering, cloning or whatever. Fontana's later novel doesn't specify that Ilyrians are non humans.

(Apologies for three posts in a row. Copy and paste isn't working for me on this new site, othewise I could have edited the first entry.)

Which doesn't make it seem any less silly to me. Quite the opposite actually.

For a guy who makes Santa Claus the antagonist-cum-protagonist in a Trek novel where a Vulcan has sex with a baboon, that's pretty tame.

I think Gods Above. The conclusion to the story about Apollo's relatives and ambrosia, anyway. And Peter David and Daniel Jackson might have differing views about the exact looks of the Egyptian deity in question... But Daniel Jackson would be right.

Sorry if this has been done to death, but does anyone know off the top of their head when the Federation was first mentioned in the series? In the first season there were references to the Enterprise being an "Earth ship" and belonging to a United Earth space service and such...

I grew up with the show and know all the episodes but not by heart! Thanks! :)

I believe "A Taste Of Armageddon" was the first mention of the Federation, while "Court Martial" was the first mention of Starfleet/Starfleet Command (though I speak under correction).

Thanks; I will have to rewatch those and keep an ear out for the dialogue!

The hair-cutting is understandable- Vulcans seem to pride themselves on a proper appearance and would not permit unruly hair to become a distraction. However, I fele the bowl cut is the most logical method of haircutting because the hairstyle, though reserved enough to be acceptable, allows for sufficient body temperature retainment.

It seems like a stupid answer until you realize that Vulcans in general dress in robes and seemingly thick articles of clothing, even on their home planet. Downright crazy to do such a thing on such a world, except in two cases;

1. The material of the clothing is very much worthless when trapping heat.
2. Vulcans simply practice a reverse insulation where the stronger heat cannot penetrate to their bodies.

Until proof of such fabric can be designed and shown, I'll have to go with option two- that Vulcans have designed their clothing and most of their hygine practices towards retaining their normal body temperature which is less than the heat of their own planet. This in turn would work off-planet as their normal body heat is also more than most other lifeforms and would sustain them in lower temperatures.

The only problem is the usual lack of facial hair. My best suggestion would be pride; prim and properness, that seems to be how you can justify a 'Logical' way of life.
