BREAKING: Paramount Sets Top Secret Star Trek Movie For Summer 2023; To Be Produced By J.J. Abrams

At this point I would be surprised if they brought the Kelvin cast back, if they did though they'll have been doing movies longer (2009-2023, 14 years) than either the TOS (1979-1991, 12 years) or TNG (1994-2002, 8 years) casts. Then again they started younger and hadn't had a TV show behind them so who knows.

I reckon it'll be a new cast with references to the Paramount+ shows (and no doubt vice versa).

I wonder what the chances are of say Discovery getting the movie treatment. That's already a few seasons in and its been a while since a TV cast has been "promoted" like that. Discovery has essentially been the main standard bearer of the franchise these past several years and probably the most recent take casual audiences might be familiar with, it would also work as a subtle Paramount+ ad too.

Or maybe they'll retool that Section 31 idea into a movie, starring Michelle Yeoh obviously.

A new Star Wars movie will be coming out in December '23 so they'll probably want to beat them to the punch too.
 
A new movie would be great, but not sure it needs to be the Kelvin cast. While i enjoyed those movies mostly im not bothered about seeing a continuation of their story.

Id like to see a new cast, with new characters, for fans set it in the prime timeline post Picard, maybe shoehorn Picard in for continuation purposes in a reasonable role but certainly not starring role, and allow the focus on the new cast. Can even be the enterprise as we dont know whats happened to the E.
 
I wonder if it'll be a Prime version of ST'09, with new actors playing the TOS cast coming together for the first time.

So like Discovery, functionally another reboot. And cheap as chips, since they have all the sets from Strange New Worlds.
 
Wonder if it will be an attempt at a shared universe STCU.. not all out Avengers/JL yet but more a pre cinematic universe set up film like IronMan2 or BvS (or The Mummy). The aim being a huge Infinity/Endgame extravaganza somewhere down the line with 'generations' of various characters/crews from all eras taking on the resurrected unbeatable time travelling villain (khan? soran? shinzon? nero?) and his armada .. Pine Kirk: 'Enterprises ..assemble!'

Why would they go where someone has gone before?

The stardate should be 2270.99, the second five-year mission would’ve ended, and ideally Kirk should be “Admiral Hornblower”, directing a fleet of brand-new ship designs for Eaglemoss to release. (Let’s make it clear in advance that Kirk’s own ship would be 21,000 feet long, give or take six inches.) Chekov would be posted elsewhere, so would anyone else who can’t come back, even Kirk himself if they don’t make a deal with Pine. The Kelvin Timeline continues as the one familiar to JJ, and everyone gets their summer event film, with characters both old and new.

Yes and no. Time travelling and villain resurrection not being required.

I'd like a miniseries. Keep it to the prime universe, set it after Picard and have some threat uniting elements of the 24th century TNG, DS9 and Voyager crews. They could include one or more flasbacks to the Enterprise crew dealing with the same problem back in the day.

I'd even consider a short pre-titles "teaser" with Kirk & Co. (pre Undiscovered Country) encountering the threat. Just a few minutes cutting together movie footage, stand ins, cg and de-ageing Shat. Just enough to set the scene.

But the same sort of artificial mechanism was created to bring Kirk and Picard together. Why do it again? You don’t want the fan service to show.

It is unashamedly fan service, but only an appearance in flashback, not some convoluted mechanism to throw the TOS or ENT crews together with the 24th century cast.
 
While I wouldn’t mind seeing another film directed or produced by Abrams, I’d argue it was the Netflix Original revolution which made it possible to develop any number of obscure shows targeting limited audiences, so why not Star Trek for Star Trek fans?
 
trying to think this through logically.. its definitely going to be the Disco writer script as in the news article few weeks back it stated Abrams/BR was producing her “original movie that she hatched.” and Abrams/BR involvement implies it will be the Kelvin cast but thats not for certain, and the 7 year gap implies it will be a new cast/another reboot (not just another kelvin cast movie), but got to bear in mind the current trend in movies is multiverse stuff coming up (DCU/MCU) and theres already been the hints of Kelvin in Disco -so that could imply its going to be some sort of Kelvin/Kirk&Co meets Prime verse (whichever cast - remaining TOS/TNG/Disco/new) and maybe incorporating elements of the Orci ST3 and Hemsworth ST4? .. basically a crossover movie to blend the universes at last?

we cant be too far away from an announcement (cast, director, vague story details) maybe this month?

My question is will Alex Kurtzman and Secret Hideout be involved? They have 5 shows in production (and there’s hints even more may be in the pipeline) so surely they’ll want to look at this for brand consistency?

You don't. Seriously. Assume I am just unaware of Kurtzman's involvement with the movies.

Or that I would intend Kurtzman Trek to refer to something like "all modern Trek, oh except minus the last Kelvin movie." That would seem rather arbitrary wouldn't it? We know what Kurtzman is primarily in charge of. If I said Berman Trek I doubt you'd question it.

Sorry, didn't look there. Just saw the TrekMovie article that was linked.

I'm sure I don't know what Paramount+ is calling their interconnected universe of show. Although I'd assume that still includes all of Classic/Roddenberry/Bennett/Berman Trek, what with their repeated insistence that the Kurtzman stuff is Prime (whatever Prime even is for that matter).

If it's a streaming movie, then I guess they can do whatever they want.

If it's theatrical, it would ideally be aimed at an audience some ten or more times that of Kurtzman Trek. I would hope they'd think better than to make a movie that pointed specifically back to the current shows and got stuck having to wear them, so to speak.

Plus at that point I'd have to wonder why bother with Abrams? I wouldn't put it past them to just have Kurtzman make it. Abrams mostly makes sense from the standpoint of looking at the other Kelvin films (not the Kurtzman shows) and just assuming he's still your go-to guy.

I seriously hope not. "Brand consistency" from my own selfish standpoint would mean not just the current TV franchise, but now also the movie one, was essentially shot. Even in the '90s when everything just bloody had to be Berman Trek I didn't think that was healthy.

If all of Trek were "brand" consistent we would have no Wrath of Khan, no Voyage Home, no Undiscovered Country nor even the 2009 movie. The Bennett/Meyer people in particular just got whoever they needed. And on the average they made better movies.
