SPOILERS - Wonder Woman 1984 - Review Thread

Oh God, someone said they liked the movie. Cue the faux outrage.

 

As was having the main theme from Sunshine start playing when Diana learned to fly. I wonder if they had some sound issues due to Covid and had to resort to recycling?

 

Maybe. I just assumed they were going to show young Bruce in the wish montage but I assume he was asleep when this happened

 

Worked for Selina and for Barbara (though, as I said, I wish Barbara's introduction were toned down some - hell, come to think of it, I wish Selina's introduction were toned down some), so I still don't care.

Or he was just permanently drunk. Wouldn't be the first guy in world history.

That would be very strange choice for a film-maker. Because Steve's confrontations were never about him being powerless, they were about his pathological need to do the right thing. His tormentors' power over him literally didn't matter to him so giving him a rematch would be a total waste of story space. Barbara, obviously, is a very different character. The scene makes perfect sense exactly as it is.

Self-defense (or defense of others) and revenge are clearly different things. Knowing the difference between them is kind of one of the most central characteristics of a hero, so a character who has no idea where the line is anymore is clearly not that heroic. At best, that's an anti-hero. And of course this is just one stop along her road to her final destination as the full-on villain.

 

She was only fueled by revenge with an intent to kill, so she was completely corrupt by that point, but the writers of this film never believed the villain should be called out on the specific act of murder.

 

It's not very important detail, but, yes, WW hasn't a memorable rogue gallery. In the first movie they used Doctor Poison who was frankly a little obscure and Ares, probably her best (relatively) known enemy. In the second one we had Cheetah, perhaps her second best (always relatively) known enemy and then they had to resort to someone who wasn't even a classic WW's villain (Lord).

Probably in the next one we'll see Doctor Psycho or Giganta, but really, WW lacks of memorable or well known villains à la Joker or Lex Luthor.

 

Circe seems like she'd go fairly high on list of enemies.

Well, after her we would have Silver Swan and then we would be scraping the bottom of the barrel.

 

Finally caught this on Blu-ray, and really enjoyed it. It felt a bit ramshackle and shaggy-dog at first -- though enjoyably so -- but as it went along, the themes, characters, and emotions came together in ways that felt greater and more affecting than the sum of their parts. The invisible jet scene was magical, literally and figuratively. Gadot and Pine were great as expected, but Wiig and Pascal both rocked their roles, as well. I'll be watching it again, and soon.

 

So, over the course of a week, I watched it twice now....

I find it an entertaining movie, but it just didn't grab me the way the first one did. Gadot, Pine, Wiig and Pascal all did amazing jobs, but other than that, nothing about the movie really grabbed me or kept me interested. I found myself checking messages on my phone more than I thought I would.

 

Well, its not really important in the historical sense that comic book heroes have been paired with villains well outside their rogue's gallery. For example, when the Spider-Man newspaper comic strip launched in the 70s, Dr. Doom was a fairly frequent antagonist, and he was never a part of the comic book version's standard rogue's gallery. Wonder Woman's next film can be treated the same way with anyone from the DC universe.

 

The Arrowverse has mixed up their heroes and villains quite a bit. Their Green Arrow went up against a lot of villains that usually fought other heroes in the comics.

Well it's understandable: while Wonder Woman's Rogue Gallery isn't well known, Green Arrow hardly has one. I mean, I'm a comic reader and I would have a hard time naming two classic enemies of him.

 

As a casual dc fan I never got the impression any of the dc heroes had a particularly strong villain roster except Batman, Superman and the Flash.

 

Green Lantern should be added to the list. But you're right as most of the others only have a couple of big name nemeses. Cheetah and Circe, or Ocean Master and Black Manta for example. The Justice League as a whole have a number of well known enemies, however.

 

Hawkman has an impressive rogue gallery too, but, yeah, they are all virtually unknown

Finally saw it, and I really don't get why people didn't like it. The only moment I didn't like was the Lynda Carter cameo at the end, that was a bit cringy. And maybe that the life of the man Steve possessed was never considered either in putting his body in danger or whether Diana should give up her wish. But other than that, I had a blast. Didn't even feel too long for me.

 

That's understandable, considering Arrow was clearly meant to be a Batman show but they merely changed the character to Ollie when they couldn't make it Batman.

 

Upon re-watch, I found my feelings hadn't really changed. I really liked it, but found the clumsiness of the body swap and stealing a plane from the Smithsonian to be really glaring errors. I thought Wiig was outstanding in the role of Cheetah as well. It's not as good as the first one, but it's still pretty damn good in most respects.
