Justice League official "Zack Snyder" cut on HBO Max

Just finished. Despite its 4 hour runtime, it did move pretty quickly once it got moving. I still think it could have benefited from the streaming series aspect. It might have got conversation and subscription numbers going much like Wandavision did (and I promise that's the last time I'll mention anything Marvel in this post). But that's not the way they decided to go and that's how it is. Overall, it was pretty good. I think maybe after a few years away from the DCEU, watching MoS, BvS and both JL versions, made me soften on the series as a whole.

I'll admit, I'm not certain why it was necessary to create a cliffhanger that, I'm sorry, probably isn't going to be resolved ay any point. It seemed like an excuse to get this Batman and Joker in a scene together. Okay, that's fine. But I feel like they could have done something bigger. I admit I was leery of any more forays with Snyder prior to the past few weeks but I just don't know that I can deal with #restorethesnydervision for years on end. Oh well. It is a testament to the fans that this version was completed. If anything further happens with this universe, I'm sure I'll be there for that too. But not counting on it.

Honestly, my biggest qualms honestly come in regards to aesthetic choices. Snyder's overreliance on slow motion is a little tired on me at this point. I think they could have trimmed 30 minutes if they hadn't done so much slow motion. We've already mentioned 4:3 vs 16:9 so no need to belabor that point. Overall, I could get really nitpicky if I wanted to (and I probably already have) but what's the point? I was entertained for four hours.

[FONT=roboto]I said I wouldn't but the positive reviews caught my curiosity and I watched the film. To compare, I watched Whedon's cut last night.

This was 10x better, if it had been released in 2017 I would have thought kinder of the DCEU

There were a few things that I thought - why the heck was that cut? Especially surrounding Cyborg and The Flash. It's truly a shame Ray Fisher won't be coming back but I feel we know Miller's Flash more, ready for his solo flick. And Darkseid as the big bad was great.

It's a pity Snyder couldn't bring in Green Lantern - either John Stewart (apparantly filmed but cut) or Ryan Reynolds. We did get more of one in the flashbacks than we did in the theatrical cut

As for the new new stuff(Knightmare) - we finally get to see DCEU Joker meet Batfleck! And Martian Manhunter was a nice addition.

The scenes from the theatrical cut that did survive took me out of it but there was far less of it than anticipated.

Is four hours too long? Yeah i had my interest waining around 1/3 of the way through but for Snyder this is a big achievement

A week ago I had written an 'F U' tweet in my head to the Snyder fans, as many had used trolling and bullying as part of the campaign. Even now there's a few Restore The Snyderverse/Bring Back Batfleck/Cavill/Extended Suicide Squad hashtags around.

Moving forward should these things happen? I'm looking forward to seeing Michael Keaton in The Flash and there are rumours he's sticking around so I hope they don't can that. This is a multiverse so there's room for infinite Batmen! But if HBOmax want to do a separate project then cool, Cavill's return would be a good shout as well, although again after Crisis I'd love to see Routh.

I wonder if this will effect plans moving forward, wether WB will want to continue this universe? 7/10[/FONT]

Yep... I had that same question. I didn't get the double burials.

Also, I believe the thing with Martha was a set up for potential sequels we'll never be getting.

Martha Manhunter? Huh? What was that all about?

I think the first time is just the humans removing the box, now within its container, from the kiln. You see the Atlanteans and the Amazons forging containers for their own boxes too.

While I did wonder about the aspect ratio at first, honestly after a while I just stopped noticing it. It probably helped that I watched it on my PC rather than on the TV so I'm sat close enough that it doesn't feel like a reduced image. Watching Wandavision for the last few months may have also recalibrated by brain to get used to the old aspect ratios again.

As for the "tribes of man" box; I just assumed the reason for them burying it instead of guarding it was at least partly because unlike the the Atlanteans & Amazons, the tribes of men were just that; tribes plural. Having one tribe guard it over the others would just cause problems and infighting. Also, unlike the other groups, the lives of men are fleeting and their level of technology was basically bronze age, so they couldn't protect it if someone other than mortal humans came to claim it.
Best to bury it in secret somewhere wild and remote, and hope nobody stumbles on it's location.

Snyder said it's because superheroes, with thier abilities to jump and fly, are vertical products, not horizontal. So he wanted to use a more vertical aspect ratio.

Same. You'd think they'd at least dig a deeper hole. But the Amazons amused me too. A fortified temple with huge stone walls that can seal off the main chamber...but the chamber has a sun roof.

Of course it all depends on masters. If master is 4:3 then if you want to convert or 16:9 you end up cutting vertical. But that hasn’t been true for any movie material shot in lemme see, 50 years?
Old Justice League I bet was 16:9 or even wider. Did he really shoot all new material in 4:3?

In an interview with IGN this past weekend, Snyder mentioned that along with his director’s cut, “Justice League” will get a special black-and-white edit he calls “Justice Is Gray” when it is released on March 18. He also said that during reshoots, he shot new footage in a 1.43:1 ratio and reformatted the movie to that same ratio to fit IMAX screens in the hopes that once the COVID-19 pandemic ends, fans could get a chance to see the film on the biggest screen possible.

In an interesting coincidence, Buffy was framed as 4:3 but was shot wider. Because people started getting widescreen TV's the company making the DVD's didn't want to deal with people complaining about black bars and also wanted to ride the "widescreen hype" of the time so they released the show in widescreen from the masters.

And so you could see crew and equipment on the edges of the screen.

Whedon was not happy. I think he was still complaining about it not too long ago.

Regarding 4:3 vs 16:9, what we should strive for is OAR - Original Aspect Ratio. In this case it's 4:3. Here are two comparisons. The Joss Whedon cut is the one cropping the picture, vertically. If black bars on the side REALLY bother you, most TVs have a zoom function which will, in this case, effectively emulate the look of the theatrical release.

Lots of things we were told about haven't happened, such as the BVS enhanced colors edition. I think those things will all be blu ray exclusives and they failed to make that clear.
