well yeah it is only about two months away.
is anyone following the news from the combine or do you consider it
to be over rated as far as determing how well a player will do in the nfl.

i mean what use is it for an offensive line player to run the 40.

and there have been a lot of great shorts and t-shirt players who couldn't do dinky do when the pads went on

Offensive linemen don't have to run 40 yards generally, but running the 40 for time does give you a measurement of overall speed. But I think teams time linemen over 20 yards also, which is much better measurement for what they have to do.

On another note, on the sports radio show I listen to they were saying that the combine is nothing but a big publicity thing for the league designed to get some buzz during the spring. The coaches are more interested in playing golf than determining who they're going to draft.

Tell that to Vikings fan. A few years ago, the Vikings drafted a wide receiver with the seventh pick based solely on his combine scores.

Certainly it's not the end all deal-breaker, but it is definitely figured into the equation.

The way I see it, it's more like: 70% college career and the other 30% consisting of combine, senior bowl, pro days, etc.

Last year I paid attention for Poz, Tony Hunt and Levi Brown. This year it looks like on Dan Connor has a shot at the first round and the other guys will be lucky to even make it. I really don't understand why Justin King decided to forgo his senior year, because he isn't rated as one of the top CBs. Whatever.

So I might pay attention somewhat when the linebackers go on Monday, but other than that I'm pretty much tuned out for the combine. Come draft day I'll be interested to see if anyone picks up Morelli and hoping Connor ends up with a team I like.

I'm just hoping that with Parcells drafting this year that the Dolphins make some good decisions. I don't care who they pick, just as long as it is somebody that can help.

Well actually I do care for one thing... I don't want Dorsey from LSU.

IMO, it's pretty much a worthless contest that tells you nothing about a player's playing skill. Game film and interviews are the best way to judge a player. If a guy drops every pass after he's tackled or doesn't break many runs what difference does his 40 time make? Jimmy Johnson always said that Game Film is a better barometer than the combine and his draft record was pretty damn good. Off the top of my head I think of two quarterbacks who were great at the combine and didn't do shit in the NFL: Jeff George and Kyle Boller.

Generally speaking, I only pay attention to the NFL draft to see what the Eagles do (which makes watching the rest of the draft painfully boring). However, this year is an exception. My University's quarterback, Joe Flacco seems to be consistently rated in the top 5 QBs in the draft (I keep seeing number 3 pop up, which for I-AA is pretty good). So I'll definitely be watching the draft until his name comes up (I'm praying he doesn't go to a team I hate, but all the teams I hate already seem to have QBs).

Of course, I always have a mild curiosity where some of the more important NCAA players will go (as well as Penn State players), but unless they're drafted in the first round, I'll usually just find out about it the next day.

I'll generally have some ratings magazines around and the internet handy as I watch the first day. It's going to be different this year though. The first day only has the first and second rounds instead of the first three. And my Giants are picking last, something I don't get to see all that often.

I turned on the combine coverage briefly today to see how Dan Connor was faring; it turns out he has the flu and isn't participating. I did get to see a quick segment on him, so my timing was pretty perfect in that regard.

Well, I am a 9ers fan... I can only cry when I see our nice draft pick go to New England!

They still have the 29th pick. I agree it will suck to see New England get our pick, but who knows, there still could be a trade, which I think might be in the Niners best interest. That's what happened last year when they picked up Staley.
