Starship design history in light of Discovery

Oh, I know they weren't. I was asked the differences with the TOS Enterprise. Except in pilot episode stock images the TOS one had the spherical shapes.

Of course, we only saw the grills for the first time in WNMHGB - Pike's ship in The Cage had these rectangular shaped details instead

It would have perfectly fine for the DSC-Ent to have that style of endcaps instead, or even a completely new design

That’s the 3-footer, IIRC. The big one had the grilles. It also appears that the big one at one time had absolutely no detailing on that rear piece whatsoever.

 

True but both the 11 footer and the 3 footer were used interchangeably throughout the pilots and series

 

That was indeed the 3 footer with the flat saucer bottom I think. Shaw did an improved version that was shrunk atop Flint’s desk. The 11 footer had very bare aft caps—the vents were painted on?

So the early AMT model had it right after all.

Interesting! He originally not only had the warp nacelles mounted on straight pylons, but he also had the rear nacelle bits pointing inward (with the spheres, as opposed to vents), hearkening back to Cochrane's Phoenix nacelle orientation. Very cool, thank you for posting that!

 

The spheres were removed because his supervisor pointed out they weren't there in 'The Cage'. Were they missing in any of the very early TOS Season 1 episodes? I don't recall.

 

Only in the flyby/orbit stock footage they inserted from the pilots throughout the series. I think the MU ISS Enterprise also had just grilles.

 

I would've liked spiked domes

 

I would have liked a scene where the spikes retract when the ship slows down. And the sensor dish dilates to adjust for sublight scanning. And the spheres at the aft ends open up to allow for drive plasma to be vented through the series of holes back there.

That was one of the most amazing fan Trek sites for tech-heads like us... ever.

I wish DrexFiles was still up just so I can read his Nx-Refit blogs again.

I started following the blog shortly before he started doing the blogs her SOTL Calendar appearance.

 

You still might be able to find something in the internet archive.

 

Drexler has also reposted a good amount of Drex Files stuff (and new stuff) on his Facebook page, set to be publically viewable so you don't have to "friend" him or, possibly, have an account to see it (Facebook is weird and inconsistent with how much "public" stuff they show un-logged in users, but I think it'll work on a computer, but not mobile).
