Well, mileage (again) will vary. I recall Rhys and Detmer from the word "Go" (credit to Lorca) for making me connect with those characters in a basic way. Personally, I didn't expect to even have that, since the target from the beginning was a different style of Trek show where the main character was the focus, with less emphasis on the ensemble. Season 3 added to that, at least with Detmer and Owo. But, that's for my part. I personally am watching and reading faces and Detmer always stood out to me since Season 1.So do I. My favorite episode of TNG is Yesterday's Enterprise and my favorite series overall is DS9 which obviously had a multiseason war arc... but neither started out that way. With TNG, it was the exception and with DS9 they slowly built up to it (although I don't know if the whole Dominion war thing was planned ala B5 from the beginning). I also prefer characters over lighting but we started off with asthetics so I went with that. I can't say that I know much about any of the bridge crew after two seasons of DISCO other than Burnham, Saru, and Tilly. I don't even know their names and I can't be the only one because I usually see them referred to by their combination of genetic traits online. I can't say that's great character development and the reviews I've seen of season 3 (again, I haven't watched it ) criticize the show for that specifically even if they're generally overall positive. Saru is my favorite character in part because they expanded on him (in addition to the actor being good, the design/makeup being interesting, etc).
Now, overall, I agree that going straight in to the Klingon War was a bit more problematic, but I owe that to the BTS chaos. So I work with what I got.
