Spoilers "Superman & Lois" Season 1 spoiler discussion!

Well...that was a very drastic shift in tone and style from the other CW/DC shows. Clearly channelling more Snyder than Donner (somewhat ironic given the not-even-a-little-subtle easter egg), at least in cosmetic terms; the suit, the desaturation, use of DOF, the handheld shots, the more grounded settings. So really I should be saying it's less Geoffrey Unsworth and more Amir Mokri, since there's not a trace of Snyder's ill conceived fixation on Ayn Rand and Christ allegories.
I haven't seen an in-continuity spin-off pivot this starkly since 'Stargate Universe', and I don't mean that in a disparaging way (I miss SGU!) Indeed, if it wasn't for the two principle cast members this could very easily have been an entirely new show since there seemed to be zero mention or even allusion to anything.

I realise this was shot during a pandemic and that Benoist was pregnant this year so a cameo probably wasn't a good idea, but you'd think at least a line of dialogue there somewhere about Aunt Kara. I mean Jordan was so quick to jump to the conclusion that something is being hidden in the barn that it can't take him that long to put two and two together vis a vis Supergirl.

Not too terribly interested in the big bad, at least not yet. I assume not seeing their face means that we (or at least Clark) will know who they are. Gut feeling: it's Jonathon from the future.

I appreciate this it's one of those "if logic happens, we don't have a story" things, but I can't help but feel like there's no way at this point in time that the ship would still be there under the Kent barn. That thing should have been moved to the fortress decades ago.

The computer called him Captain Luthor, so I'm pretty sure he's an alternate Lex. I guess Jonathan could have somehow ended up becoming a Luthor somehow in that universe, but that seems unlikely. As for not showing his face, I'm thinking that's because he's going to pop up in Smallville using a fake name later during the season.
NCIS? Are you not bored of that show by now? It’s on its 18th season. :)
Not at all, they've managed to do a good job of keeping things fresh. The fact that it's ended up with a mostly new cast the last few years has helped.
Eh, it seems more like a Lois & Clark situation where the people making the show desperately want to ignore superman as much as possible, except the kids are the focus instead of mostly Lois. So barely any Superman per episode, and once the bare minimum amount of Superman is shown they then go back to the standard teen drama that CW is seemingly legally obligated to shove into every show on their network, even the ones without teen characters.

But, to be fair, the show that the CW calls Batwoman has literally no appearances by the real Batwoman in its second season, so S&L has got that show beat, at least.
Did you actually watch the episode?
I really enjoyed it.
The prologue was a cool, I love that they actually had him in a more old fashion suit, with the 40s shield.
I was expecting Sam Lane to be more antagonistic, so I was pleasantly surprised when that he actually seems to get along with Clark pretty well.
I'm not quite sure what to make of Jonathan throwing the ball like he was super strong as a kid, but then not having powers as a teenager. I'm not sure if that was a mistake or if there's something more going on there.
I loved that our big first Superman scene was him stopping the nuclear plant melting down, rather than him beating up a bad guy.
I like that Sarah was actually more interested in Jordan than Jonathan. I had assumed since Jonathan was the jock, she'd automatically go for him.
Lana's husband is a bit an ass.
I knew from the trailers it was going to be more serious than the other Arrowverse shows, but I was a bit surprised just how little humor it had. I can allow some of that since we were dealing with the aftermath of Martha's death, but I'm hoping maybe once things get going it'll lighten up a bit.
Speaking of the Arrowverse, I was expecting at least at or two references to the other characters, like Kara at least.

I hadn't realized it, but it's based on the Fleischer cartoons' costume rather than the early comics' costume.

I saw a quote from the showrunner saying he wanted to recreate the iconic Action Comics #1 cover where Superman holds a green car over his head, but he thought the cover showed Superman "saving" the car. In fact, Superman was smashing the car into a rock to thwart the escape of a trio of hoods (a scene that actually is in the story). That's why the men on the cover look so freaked out and terrified. They're the bad guys he's terrorizing with his inhuman strength.

I suppose it makes sense that Lois would've told her dad the truth when they got married, and that might've brought him around. Still, it seems he's antagonistic in the sense of wanting Clark to devote more time to heroics instead of family.

We saw him throw a football that broke the rope on a tire swing. (Not to be confused with the flashback shots of young Clark throwing his toy rocket through the corner of the farmhouse.) It was probably just that the rope was frayed through and on the verge of breaking already.

I'm surprised that they removed Martha so quickly from the story.
One or both of Clark's parents have been alive since John Byrne's 1986 retelling of his origin.
I figured she was going to have a stroke and be incapacitated, necessitating Clark and Lois move back to help run the farm and help with Martha's rehabilitation.
They wouldn't have to have her in every episode.

True, but I can see why they did it here. This show is further along in Clark's life than we've ever seen him before, and it's focusing on Clark as a father rather than a son (and hopefully equally on Lois, of course). Leaving him without his own parents to offer guidance makes it more of a challenge.

Still, come to think of it, given that Lois's father is a regular presence, it would've been a nice bit of symmetry for Clark's mother to be around to balance him. There could've been some interesting debates between them.

I was surprised at how likeable Jordan Kent was. It's a testament to Garfin's abilities that he makes the most problematic and potentially irritating character on the show charming.

Ollie changed alot of things in this new joint Universe for the better.
I can get not saving Barry's mom because Flashpoint already showed how that turned out.. Would have been nice to get his Dad back tho.

Not sure how Ollie knew enough about Clark to get them twins, so not sure it was intentionally changed for better... Guess smushing universes together just has unpredictable results.

The most shocking thing was that Jordan was able to get an Uber in Smallville.

I’m also surprised Injustice 2 is a thing there. Surely that’s slander to Superman. :)

I doubt Oliver could've consciously micromanaged every single detail in the creation of an entire multiverse, even with the Spectre's powers. My take is that the new multiverse evolved pretty naturally, but the feelings and hopes of Oliver and the Paragons had a subtle influence on the way things turned out on Earth Prime. This version of Superman wasn't a Paragon, but maybe Kara was aware of his wish to be a family man and his regret that it didn't happen sooner.

Anyway, it took me a few moments to figure out that Jordan is named in honor of Jor-El, so Clark honored both his fathers in the boys' names. (I wonder if their middle names come from Lois's family. Or maybe she's holding out for a daughter.) It might be a nod to Alan Moore & Curt Swan's "Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow?", the imaginary-story coda to the pre-Crisis continuity, in which Superman had his identity outed, faked his death, and married Lois under the new identity of Jordan Elliot.

Now that CGI capes are so easily done, they need to be a tiny bit more careful making sure that his cape has a reflection and/or shadow. Notice when Superman lowers the green car to the ground that his cape isn't reflected in the wet ground the way his legs are? [/Minor nitpick]

Maybe he got that cape from a vampire.

Just the scene homaging old school superman, and I saw that online. The teens are a deal breaker, I'm not going to watch a supposed Superman show that is actually about teenagers. The show should be about Superman/Clark and Lois, not teen romance bullshit staring their shitty CW style kids. I like this Superman well enough just from what I've seen before, and I'd watch a show where he was the main focus, but that is not this show.

I put up with the high school years of Smallville, waiting until the show left High School and actually became decent (and sometimes very good). I'm never doing that again (and at least Smallville had the decency to cast an at the time 24 year old as the "teen" lead, as opposed to generic CW teens).

Plus, various things said by former S&L writer Nadria Tucker really make the show seem shitty behind the scenes. I don't know if this was posted before, but for context here is what I'm talking about:

She sounds like one of those Twitter people who complains about everything. Maybe it’s a good thing she was let go

I don’t think Clark knows he has it? He wasn’t present when Jordan took it from the rocket. Unless he’s randomly X-raying his teenage sons all the time, which would be pretty intrusive.
It was fully visible in his hand to even a casual observer when he was outside the barn. Then it was never followed up on. A shot of Jordon palming it or pocketing it would have been sufficient for me. Anyway, for the time being I can assume that's what happened; it's just a quibble.

I didn’t guess it. That was leaked nearly a year ago.
I enjoyed it. Some interesting observations. At the end of Crisis, Superman seemed confused that he had twins. Looks like the new reality has set in. Does he even remember what happened?

Martian Manhunter said he restored his allies memories of the previous timeline, so he should.

They recast Lois’ dad as well. Rumor has it that Morgan Edge is also a different actor.

Blame it on Crisis?

NOTES: No surprise that even in the flashback to the Daily Planet, James Olsen would be nowhere to be seen--and according to Supergirl's pilot, he was the first person to take Superman's photo, so he had to be working for the Planet before Clark, and should have been there--or even referred to.

Ah, but that was the pre-Crisis timeline.

Ahh, there were a few shots lifted from Man of Steel and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, with an injured Superman falling back to earth. That, and the Kent farm almost lost. Well, if you're going to steal, steal from the best.

:guffaw:

That half hour special after the Pilot

Our channel here didn't air that; is it online anywhere?

I was expecting to see Kara at the funeral. Then not even a phone call or mention of her at all. Am I missing something timeline wise?

You can always fall back on the tried and true super hero excuse of her being busy at the time. She may not even be on Earth.

The name Foswell for the current Daily Planet editor seemed vaguely familiar.

Sure enough briefly in the early 1990s Samuel Foswell was the temporary Editor while Perry White was on vacation. I am amazed I remembered that. Very deep cut reference. Right when I started reading comics. https://dc.fandom.com/wiki/Samuel_Foswell_(New_Earth)

First he fires Jimmy, now Clark...

the people making the show desperately want to ignore superman as much as possible

As some one who watched the show; it really really doesn't.

She also appeared in In Theory (TNG) as LT-JG Jenny D'Sora, Data's temporary girlfriend.

Well, now I feel old...

I’m also surprised Injustice 2 is a thing there. Surely that’s slander to Superman. :)

Maybe NetherRealm said they'd give his share of the profits to charity. That's always how companies get him to agree to letting them make merch in the comics.
