Legendary's Godzilla 2 & beyond - News & Rumors

Not gonna happen. That was a Universal film.

 

I don’t see this movie straight up killing off either one of them.

 

Since they're both "hero" kaiju in this franchise, they'll probably team up against the real villain in the third act.

 

It really does look like MechGodzilla is in one or two shots in the trailer, so I'm figuring at the end the real Big G and Kong will team up against MG.

 

I'm not particularly certain that we're gonna see a "Fake Godzilla" either -- our homeboy Goji seems to be attacking Apex plants and installations, with massive collateral as well, probably for upsetting the natural order with Mechagodzilla or something along those lines. Almost guaranteed that the two will team up to take down MG, but that doesn't necessarily mean one won't fall afterward.

Cool and disappointing at the same time. As usual in these Vs movies there will be no clear winner to keep everyone happy.

 

The director has promised there will be a clear winner. My guess is that one will be defeated but not killed and then they both have to team up.
Something that I haven't seen anyone discuss is that it's possible Legendary's license to Godzilla may end after this movie, but they will no doubt want the Monsterverse to continue. So I kind of expect Kong to win this and finally be referred to as King Kong.

 

In the American films, the character's actual name is just Kong, with "King Kong" being an epithet only occasionally, if ever, used in-story (the original film went through various working titles like Kong: King of Beasts and Kong: The Jungle King before settling on the final phrase). Note that the 1933 quickie sequel is called just Son of Kong, not Son of King Kong. It's only in King Kong vs. Godzilla that "King Kong" (or Kingu Kongu) is treated as the character's actual name, though in King Kong Escapes he's called Bon Kong (meaning King Kong) by the natives of his home island and Kong by everyone else.

 

All that may be true, but it makes narrative sense to me. Godzilla gets a movie called King of the Monsters, while Kong’s two movies just refer to him as Kong. If he wins the fight, then he can be titled King Kong.

 

A movie title is one thing. How the character is addressed in-story is another. It's not like it's anything but a nickname in any case; monsters do not have organized polities or heads of state. So I don't see how it matters.

Yes, it appeared as a nickname. I acknowledged as much. My point is that the character's actual name is Kong, and there's nothing wrong with addressing him that way.

 

And Legendary Kong has never been referred to as King Kong, while past versions have. My point is simply that it makes narrative sense to me that he will win the fight and they will use this as the moment to give him the title. Think of it as an "Avengers assemble" type situation. It's when he finally earns it.

 

I'd be curious to know to what extent they have been. Did the "King" epithet get used in-story in the DeLaurentiis version (including the sequel King Kong Lives) and the Jackson version? And if so, how extensively? Did it only appear in signage? Was it spoken in dialogue, and if so, how many times? Again, the character's actual name is only Kong, in every version except KKvG. The "King" part is just a nickname, and thus not essential. After all, the name "Kong" comes from the language of the Skull Island indigenes, while "King" is an English title appended by Kong's abductors.

It clearly matters more to you than it does to me. It's not a literal title; it doesn't actually mean anything or afford him any status or abilities he didn't already have. It's just a metaphor. I don't need to hear it used in-story any more than I need to hear the Doctor called "Doctor Who" in-story.

I just made a comment about how I think the filmmakers will use a word they've thus far avoided using in the titles. You were the one who got all pedantic about it.

 

This is a discussion board. We're here to talk about stuff. My question was in earnest -- I'd like to know to what extent the "King" title was used in the various remakes, because I can't find information about that on the wikis.

I'm honestly surprised it's taken this long for them to use sign language with Kong. However when you look back at film portrayals with King Kong its usually a damsel in distress/actress who likely doesn't know sign language.
