I imagine the Romulan government and the Tal Shiar would've prioritised getting their infrastructure relocated as much as possible, leaving the citizens until that was sorted. Starfleet would supplement that evacuation, not spearhead it.

It's not like the citizens would be their priority. And the Romulans would not tell Starfleet until absolutely necessary.

First of all, the Romulans in Picard are no longer an Empire, indeed the Romulan Star Empire seems to have been dissolved and replaced by something called the Romulan Free State. Also, I wouldn't call those warbirds we see in the finale "on par with Starfleet." We don't really get a look at their combat capabilities, but considering after Riker's fleet showed up, Commodore Oh/General Nedar just spends a few minutes posturing before just flying off without firing a shot at the Starfleet ships. I'm guessing she knew if it came to a fight, Starfleet would win the day.

That's definitely a possibility, I wonder if she chose to withdraw because she knew the Romulans couldn't sustain a lengthy conflict with Starfleet. She could lose 15 ships and have no way to rebuild, while Starfleet still had the vast resources of the Federation behind them.

Either way, that still proves my larger point the Romulan Free State is not a power comparable to what the Romulan Star Empire was.

FWIW, I also never liked Jurati. My favorite season 2 fantasy is that she'll get atrial and be sentenced to several years in a cozy prison colony, like the one where we first met Tom Paris. No chance in hell (a trial, maybe, but at worst she'll get probation).

I wasn't aware I was to like Jurati. Even on rewatch I didn't find her very likeable.

Ha-ha. She's like the anti-Tilly on Discovery. At first I didn't think I was going to like Tilly. When I first saw her I was like, 'seriously.' But she grew on me and she won me over during the Mirror Universe stint. She has my all time favorite line: "If I were your captain I'd cut your tongue out and use it to lick my boot."

Tilly overcame her initial annoying shortcomings and even became endearing in some ways. Her final plea to Stamets when he was thinking about leaving the ship was heartfelt, when she finally just admitted that she didn't want him to go.

But Jurati. In the beginning I thought, ok, I'll give her a shot. I didn't like Tilly at the start so maybe she'll get better. But it didn't. In fact, it got worse. She's a wreck, she betrays them, is a wreck about doing it but does it anyway. Sure she tries to atone for the things she did. But I find her annoying. Like that friend you have that's always complaining and crying about how everything is so unfair. Seriously shut up and get over yourself

Well, that wasn't my reaction but I can certainly see why someone would find her annoying. I just didn't like her in terms of trusting her. But, she still worked for me in the story sense.

After reading the Picard novel, "The Last, Best Hope" I had some hope when she made her appearance she might be a decent character. Now, after seeing her on screen, I could see her going that way from the novel (which takes place about 10 years prior). She was intelligent and smart, but sadly she turned out to be weak minded and easily manipulated.

I guess that's why I don't mind her. She is a tragic figure in the story. More interesting even if unlikable.

She doesn't really betray them since her treachery was coerced through mind meld.

Picard was getting really good. Especially the XB's. I always wondered how they could be brought back from the Collective.

The darker question is, in all of the time that the Borg Cube was being studied by the Romulans, what type of evil did the Romulans do inside the core of asteroids that only a phase generator would allow a ship access to?

Have the Romulans seeded asteroid belts across the galaxy with new types of Borg drones that will devastate anyone who isn't Romulan? Basically, each asteroid, containing hundreds of Drones, would attack a passing by ship, just like a limpet mine, and then assimilate the ship and its crew.

Or everyone turning on Kirk in STV: TFF. Or Tuvok turning the crew in that Voyager episode where they're watching the 3D movie on the holodeck.

I'd forgotten "The Mind's Eye." And I have no idea what VOY episode you're talking about.

    Clearly you repressed it :D

Not sure which season 7 was weaker - voyager or tng (ds9 was clearly the best), but Voyager season 7 was fairly weak

So after doing my first rewatch of Lower Decks and reminding myself that I should try to be a little optimistic about new Trek (after being thoroughly underwhelmed by Discovery), I decided to give Picard a go and I'm pleasantly surprised by the pilot episode. Up until now I've not watched any of it and not read anything into plots or storylines or themes, so this is pretty much all new to me.

With Sir Patrick in the lead role the acting is always going to have a strong core, and I'm enjoying Orla Brady as an Irish Romulan (who knew there was such a thing), and the plot has a nice element of mystery to it whilst trying to also fill the viewer in on the last two decades of history.

I'm not sure how I feel about Starfleet's apparent racism around the Romulans, after fighting along side them in the Dominion War and the Starfleet mandate to foster peaceful relationships (they also saw how helping to save the Klingons made a huge difference in improving relations with one former enemy, so doing the same again would only make sense, but I digress). The synths storyline does open up interesting thoughts about just how the Federation employed robotic humanoids that weren't Data and just how much work was going into the field that we've never seen before.

Visually, it's stunning to look at and the action scenes are very full on and fun, whilst Picard gets some pontificating in there as well. There were a few points I began to wonder if they were going to be exploring the idea of his having Irumodic Syndrome, which I think would be a very poignant topic to touch upon though I doubt that will be the case.

All in all, there's enough in the first episode to entice me to watch more, so I'm thinking this will be me for the evening and tomorrow as well.
