Yeah, this pandemic isn't ending anytime soon. Just release them in the quickest and easiest way possible so the most people can see them.

I love tradition, too, but come on. Now is not the time.

What about you people talking about? We have two vaccines that are nearly 100% effective and everyone will be vaccinated by summer or fall at the latest. A wide release in November is safe and makes perfect financial sense. They would lose hundreds of millions of dollars releasing to streaming in June.

I like it, it definitely fits the Ghostbusters style, and kind of reminds me a little bit of Slimer.

It's not that simple. Circumstances are changing all the time. Take for example the shipments of vaccine to Canada that have been halted due to an issue at the factory in Europe, and they've barely begun to administer it.

Should studios wait indefinitely until it's "safe" again? No, these movies are expensive and sitting on them isn't doing them and any investors any favors, so it's better for them to find digital distributors to at least recoup some of their cost instead of waiting until who knows when. Once it is safe again, then maybe they can have wider theatrical releases for movies that have come out during the Pandemic, but for now it's the reality that we all live in.

Infectious disease experts disagree with you, especially considering it was just two weeks ago we had 300,000 new cases reported in a single day. Beyond logistical issues that we're already seeing because the vaccines are merely being distributed to state health departments, some of which are much more proactive regarding the pandemic than others, there is significant anti-vaxxer sentiment in the U.S. population--according to studies, nearly a third of Americans believe that COVID was created in a lab, and something like 27 percent of Americans believe that COVID is a hoax and refuse to get the vaccine. This is a huge fucking problem.

Exactly what do they have to lose by waiting? It's not like an empty house where you would have to pay a mortgage , property taxes, etc.

Unless one of the participants does something monumentally stupid, it won't lose money on a later release.

It is most certainly NOT clear what you get out of releasing "early". For a lower budget movie, sure, it could be worth it. But the movies we are talking about? Doesn't make sense.

I am with @Kelthaz on this.

In the US, and assuming current rates of vaccination hold, experts are estimating that fully vaccinating the population (that is, 70-80% of all people are vaccinated) will only take ABOUT 10 YEARS. Yes, hopefully the rates of vaccination can start to pick up now that an actually competent administration is in charge, and we'll start to see better looking numbers where we can actually talk about being back to normal by the fall. But right now, that is presumptuous in the extreme.

Dr. Fauci said 100 million in about 100 days is doable. Also, many of the reckless superspreaders have gotten it.

Things seem to be getting back to normal already in China.

To the extent "normal" exists in a repressive society like China.

Presumably, lots. It takes money to make movies, and they aren't making any money by just sitting around for the situation to get better. By getting them streamed, they can at least hope to get a partial amount of their cost back via streaming rights. To just wait and wait isn't going to do the industry any favours. By at least streaming it, people will be seeing them in a safe manner. It's not like we can change the circumstances that are out of control. We just have to learn to make the best of them and adapt to new normals.

There's also the very real possibility that AMC and Regal are out of business by the end of the year; both companies have received short-term cash infusions but they have debt loads that would make any half-brained accountant start guzzling equal amounts of Maalox and Drano. For example, the theater a half-mile from my apartment--I forget the company that operated it, it wasn't a huge nationwide group like AMC but it was a decent-sized regional one, like Marcus--closed last summer and no one is interested in buying the property.

Considering Netflix and Apple were offering north of $300 million--which is a cash payment, not something split between exhibitor, distributor and studio--for movies like No Time to Die and Top Gun: Maverick, companies are leaving money on the table right now in the vague hope that we'll magically return to the halcyon days of five years ago.

We only have one big theatre chain here in town, which is Canada's Cineplex, and for at least 10 years or more, they had a monopoly in our town as we had no other theatres, until the independent one opened up. I can only imagine having only one and then having the impact of this happening. I kind of fear the possibility of either one having to close, as I don't think they'll be able to run at a reduced capacity for very long, and then there's the fact we're currently in a province-wide lockdown.

Why would anyone buy the property RIGHT NOW? Depending on the quality of the theater (which i presume is in good shape, as opposed to one in the Englewood neighborhood on the South Side of Chicago, which has been vacant for about 15 years), you would want to have maybe 1 month to clean and redecorate before opening up (plus taking time to set up deals with distributors).

Top Gun could easily make $1 billion... not just for the nostalgia people, but if they can make it Fast & Furious in the air, then you've got a whole new generation. $300 million pretty much covers the cost of the movie (especially Tom Cruise)... even if it ONLY made $600 million (plus extra media hype, merchandise, etc.), it would still be worth it, plus it gets them in good graces with theater chains for future movies.

If we don't think movie and concert venues will stop completely due to Covid, why would we think so with movie theaters? Maybe a scaling back, and maybe some repurposing (like sports events at certain times), but it will be worth it for them later on.

^^^ There actually was a publication by this name for the old Ghostbusters RPG from back in the 80’s. I think I still have my copy somewhere. Here’s the synopsis.

Apart from side effects such as death (or Bell's Palsy or other issues, but statistically speaking are those numbers out of line?), or how the quantity of vaccines has fallen short, the number of spoiled supplies due to tampering... the list goes on and on and instead of mentioning them all I'll just get to the next point as that's even more fun: Not to mention variant strains, not all of which will be treated by the current iteration of the vaccines. Not to mention drug interactions, covid interacting with other diseases a patient has, and how it's airborne (albeit localized, hence the need to wear masks - and not everybody is, does it matter why at this point as the fact that the mutations have occurred only makes containing this more difficult)... The reality is, this is not going away any time soon and it is affecting everybody in one form or another or multiple forms.

That was short, but fun. I love that they went with the same kind of music we got in the first two.
