S03 E13: Why does USS Discovery inside looks like Borg cube?

So.. Where's engineering in that deck plan?? Engineering ISN'T that small, Usually 2-3 decks and a good chunck wide.

And don't forget, they lopped off the bottom of the engineering hull during the refit, so it is technally.. Shorter.

Screen caps are up.

She's falling multipule decks.

He's falling awhile, and no idea how tall those.. Greebles.. are..

Best at Warp effect since 2005!

I was fine with the earlier times DIS showed the funhouse turboshafts. I just told myself "Meh -- it's just a stylized/metaphorical/symbolic representation of the inner workings of the ship and not meant to be a realistic depiction."

Well, they blew that rationalization out of the water.
:vulcan:

Yeah, that's my theory. The tech has been presented before so I see no reason to not assume otherwise until it's stated on screen.
So... If that tech still exists why do they need dilithium?

Because you could generate the same amount of power by just adding in a couple dozen fusion reactors and deuterium storage tanks.

Not sure what one has to do with the other. But, based upon presentation, dilithium presents the most consistent energy output with minimum storage cost.

Whenever we say energy is produced by something we mean turned from one type (including matter) to another.

Conservation of energy.

In Pen Pal's it was the alignment of the Dilithium crystals which produced the problems (however, it wasn't mentioned that Dilithium was generating its own energy).
Here's the dialogue:

WESLEY: Drema Four has the largest deposit of dilithium ore ever recorded. It's also laid down in a very unusual pattern. The crystals are growing to form perfectly aligned lattices.
HILDEBRANDT: The ore is forming generator strata.
ALANS: Which creates a piezoelectric effect.
PICARD: In plain English, you're saying the dilithium is causing the geological catastrophe.
ALANS: Right, the crystals take the natural radiant heat of the planet
HILDEBRANDT: Focus it, and turn it into mechanical energy.
ALANS: Which increases tectonic stresses
HILDEBRANDT: That tear the planet apart.
DAVIES: And then the crystals break down, which is why we found all these traces of illium 629.

So, as its mentioned, the Dilihium merely took the natural radiant heat of the planet, focused it and turned it into mechanical energy... the Dilithium wasn't generating energy on its own. It was a medium for focusing and converting energy from one form into another.

TNG, DS9 and VOY clearly establish that Dilithium is used for focusing/controlling M/AM reactions to make large amounts of power.
Obviously, ships and their systems can run WITHOUT dilithium and M/AM generators (as its been established even in Discovery)... problem is, you usually need Dilithium and M/AM to generate sufficiently LARGE amount of power to travel via Warp... but a lot of alternative FTL propulsion technologies (much like the Spore Drive) do NOT need Dilithium and M/AM to function (they can easily run off auxiliary power - aka Fusion reactors)

Quantum Slipstream wasn't mentioned it ran on Antimatter (nor was the same thing mentioned for Coaxial Warp - specifically that is) when it was first encountered after all... but it was mentioned that version 2 which VOY crew created needed benamite crystals to run (which they had the ability to synthesize in a few years - after which they would degrade fairly quickly - but both of those issues, including the phase variance would have been realistically solved by SF and the Federation at large within a decade or two after Voyager's return - plus, they still could have used Version 1 of QS drive which didn't need benamite crystals and was much faster than Warp drive - 300 Ly's per 1 hour, or 150 Ly's in 30 mins).
