Another way to have defeated Khan in TWOK?

I just thought of this: when Kirk was stalling for time, in order to get the prefix codes on the USS Reliant, he then ordered the USS Enterprise to fire upon that ship, after its shields went down. What if, instead of discharging weapons fire, Kirk simply had transported Khan and his Bridge crew to a holding cell instead? Was there any indications that the transporters were out at the time? I forget the exact dialogue when Spock read off the damage done to the ship. Granted, TWOK would have been a shorter film, but still...

In fact, if you were Kirk, could you think up another means to defeat Khan in the film? Just curious.

The dialogue in the film strongly suggests that the transporters were down directly following the attack. They are barely working after auxiliary power is restored later, and the ship limps to Regula. They don’t work later in the film either, when the landing party is stuck on Regula.

"Anything clever" is probably ruled out by the fact that Kirk's so-called crew consists mostly of cadets and trainees who are scared out of their wits. A regular crew might snap into irregular action at the slightest gesture from Kirk, or an eyebrow twitch from Spock. But even getting somebody to man the transporter console might be asking too much in this particular crisis.

It's a bit of a wonder they managed to fire the phasers when in TOS the action still required the cooperation of a number of belowdecks levelheaded professionals.

It was my understanding that the purpose of the dedicated tactical station on the bridge was to move those personnel up where the captain could command them directly.

It is weird to me that McCoy apparently didn't or couldn't detect it, but maybe Ceti Eels are just difficult to detect on 23rd century medical tricorders? It's hard for me to believe that he didn't do at least a cursory scan of Chekov and Terrell given the conditions in which they were found.

They never do that, yet it would be an awesome weapon.

I mean they did that in the mirror universe but only as a way of executing people. Well, there's also the Kazon incident and that episode where Archer is ejected into space and beamed from the vacuum into the ship.


Btw, even being exposed to the vacuum of space for a few seconds would cause terrible damage to one's body. For one thing, the air in your lungs would blow through your mouth so fast it would damage said mouth in the process, and your lungs.

When were Our Heroes supposed to beam the bridge crew of the Reliant into space though? That is to say, when in the film is Reliant known to be hostile and the E definitely has working transporters and Reliant has shields down?

the easiest would be for Kirk to just have raised shields. I realize that they’re trying to make him look “rusty” because of how long he’s been out of action, but to have characters POINT OUT that he should raise shields and then have him ignore it has him look worse than rusty, it makes him look incompetent. That scene just drags on with the “Reliant”approaching and Kirk just seeming clueless, and it’s poor writing. They should have come up with another way for Khan to get the upper hand there without making Kirk look clueless.

Yes, Kirk is a bit out of it, but so is Khan, worse even, I mean he's supposed to be a superior mind, "I never forget a face." Yet he falls for the simplest tricks. He should have changed the access code for the remote control thing, he should have understood Spock's "coded" message, he should have all sorts of alternative plans in case the first plan failed. That's what superior minds do they see different possibilities. It looks like his prolonged stay on Ceti Alpha five has left him with an addled brain.
