The real question here.

If all that's needed is physical contact, why didn't they hook Discovery up to Federation HQ and turn it into a mobile battlestation?

I'd say, "no grappling arms," but given how they revealed the cloaking device, who the hell knows what else that ship has?

Like others, I'll have to see how this fits with the rest of the finale because this was a table-settler for the next two episodes.

One thing I did like was the burr in the command chair bit. It was just simple, but a good piece of character building. The moment where Michael describes the first time she was left in command was a small character moment that I've been waiting to see. Even the fact that Saru is using the burr gives a little more to his character as well.

Once again, Doug Jones knocks his scenes out of the park. His amazement at being human and all of his scenes afterward where he is torn about what to do and when he hears the lullaby. Bill Irwin does an overall good job, but one thing I did notice was that he had mimicked the arm swinging walk that Jones does and it built in that little bit more into the Kelpien species.

Was it ever stated that any security or tactical officers were added to Discovery's crew over the first two seasons? When the series started, the crew was primarily made of scientists working on the spore drive among other things. Starfleet science vessels never seemed to have these extremely experienced crews or a real focus on security. Perhaps this is why the ship is taken over with such ease. There's literally no security or "grizzled veterans" to put up a real fight. Just an idea.

One thing that bothers me about this episode is how it — and the season in general — are treating the crew as incompetent, unreliable, unprofessional or unlikable.

Saru: Too incompetent and indecisive to be captain.
Tilly: Too green and incompetent to be first officer.
Burnham: Grossly insubordinate, completely unreliable, had to be relieved as first officer. And apparently gravely lacking in self-awareness, based on her comments about Saru being too emotional for command.
Stamets: Professional judgment compromised by Culber’s death.
Reno: Demeaning and rude in general.

Somehow Discovery’s most functional crew member is the guy who died and got resurrected.

I mean, it worked out well for the Enterprise so why not?
Perfect officers make for boring drama. Give me Kirk second guessing himself and making mistakes but pulling off a last minute save.
No kidding. My favorite episode is Balance of Terror and in that McCoy is counseling Kirk of an appropriate course of action. I see TNG praised because they made the bold choice of having a counselor on the bridge.

So, apparently indecisiveness comes with the command track so we need counselors.

Obsession is another good one where Kirk isn't on his A game.

The way Discovery is used to doing things is going to come into conflict with the way Vance wants to do things. Ships in the fleet he commands are at a premium.

He's not going to like that the location of Starfleet Command has been compromised. It's very likely, if Osyraa doesn't kill him off, that he'll want to shake things up to keep it from happening again. He's trying to be understanding of Discovery, but he doesn't strike me as someone who likes to play things fast-and-loose.

I really hope that they don't kill him off because Vance is definitely one of those admirals that I like. I think that the Discovery crew has been through, as the medical terminology would have it, a shit ton and that has resulted in some bad habits in terms of their day to day running of their ship.

Now, from my own perspective, that is completely understandable. A ship going from a war footing, to being betrayed by a captain, to facing down several threats, they are understandably going to adapt and go by the beat of a different drum. But, now they need to work within a larger organization again, rather than being sent out all on their own to resolve problems, or being wisked away.

They really need to watch D3: The Mighty Ducks.

One reason I love Sisko is because there were times he just didn't give a damn what Starfleet said or wanted. The best uniformed officers in any profession involving weapons and the use of force are the ones who don't blindly follow every order and question the validity of their superiors.
